I know there was some debate for a while as to what the "hatches" on top of the catamaran hull of the Akira were for. These hatches might have been for warp cores or something else. Well, while searching through an aircraft book today, I found the answer.

The hatches serve no purpose whatsoever. They are there as a tongue-in-cheek to the P-38 Lightening of WWII. The P-38 is well known for having a catamaran hull almost identical to the Akira. On the catamaran hull, on top, in almost the exact same place as it is on the Akira, are the EXACT same hatches. As for what they serve on the P-38, I have no clue, but the similarity is uncanny.

They were turbo-chargers on the P-38. It was very secret at the time they made the plane. But that's what they are. As for the ship, I have no idea.

It doesn't matter if you don't know what you're doing as long as you look good doing it.
