Bernd pointed this out to me when he scanned a few things out of ST:The Magazine. The pic shows a few sketches by Matt Jefferies when he was designing the original Enterprise. But if you look at the two sketches just above the caption in the middle they have an surprisingly similar design to the Defiant, if not the exact same basic shape!
Anyway, I just thought I'd point that out.

Of course... Jim Martin could have been looking through some of Matt's old drawings for some ideas...
Of course we've got the Daedelus class from Matt's old drawings.
I think they got their idea for some other classes like the Miranda and the Oberth from Matt's old drawings...
If you look through there are a few with Saucer on top of nacelles with a dangling 'engineering section'. The nacelles are long TOSeque nacelles though... maybe a prefrefit Oberth!?!
Someone should try and put together a page of all of Matt's old drawings so we can see some older designs from the TOS era (cause really they could have been made if there was a necessity for it - It gives you an idea of other Jefferies-type designs.)
Every item (art of... etc) that releases Matt Jefferies' old drawings seem to include some new ones.
Two sources I know include the TOS Sketch Book and the Art of Star Trek...
Now there are the Magazine pictures...
Where has Bernd got all these pics??
