OK, in that episode I can't remember the name!!! arrrrgh. Anyway... -was it A Matter Of Time? - anyway Berlinghoff asked each of the senior stafff what they thought the greatest technological advance was in the last two hundred years. Riker said "The Warp Drive" where the "Warp Coil" restricted them to one sector...
1. Does this mean that the Phoenix and the Valiant had warp coils.
2. Does this mean that the Romulan Wars took place using warp coils... and thus with in the one sector? This would be sector 001 would it not?

Riker said, "Warp Drive. Before that, humans were restricted to a single sector of the galaxy." I believe humans had warp drive at the time of the Earth/Romulan war, but there were no subspace radios.

Riker's statement was safely conservative from the writers' point of view. We can take it to mean that "warp drive" was the most important human discovery between the birth of the universe and the post-22nd century era, even though Rasmussen was obviously asking only about things that had been invented after 2100 AD or 2200 AD. Riker need not have understood Rasmussen's question perfectly (after all, it *was* a rather oddly formulated question from a time traveler).
Also, saying that humans were "restricted to one sector" does not preclude early sublight interstellar journeys if the writers one day want to introduce these as part of Earth's spaceflight history.
BTW, Aban you seem to know this dialogue in detail. Could you reproduce ALL of it here? Worf's statement about phasers was at least as interesting as Riker's warp thing.

Sadly, Timo, I'm quoting from memory and I don't remember what Worf said. I think he just said "Phasers. There were no phasers [whenever]." Then Rassmusen went off on some diatribe about how everybody sees history differently and made one of many attempts to bed Dr. Crusher.
