Let's see if any of you guys are good at history! Does anyone know what kind of ship gave it's name to the Nebula class starship Merrimack? Was it a steam powered frigate? Was it an iron clad ship?JDW ------------------

USS Merrimack was actually a wooden Union vessel that was in the Norfolk Navy Yard when the Confederacy captured it. Her hull was stripped bare & used for the foundation of the CSS Virginia.------------------ "Omigod. Singing meat. This is altogether too much."

That is correct. The Merrimac is the Union steam-powered frigate. It became the Confederate ironclad and renamed Virginia.People often mistake the ironclad for having the name Merrimac only because it once had that name when the US Navy had it. ------------------ [Bart's looking for his dog.] Groundskeeper Willy: Yeah, I bought your mutt - and I 'ate 'im! There in fact was a real HMS Bounty. Those mutiny stories are true.------------------ [Bart's looking for his dog.] Groundskeeper Willy: Yeah, I bought your mutt - and I 'ate 'im! Yes. In fact, the nine surviving crewmen settled on Pitcairn Island in the pacific and formed a small christian society. There are many direct descendants of the mutineer leader Fletcher Christian there today.------------------ Here lies a toppled god, His fall was not a small one.
