Anyway, I was thinking we should co-opt the time-honored workplace practice of guessing a new baby's delivery date & time and weight for the expectant new delivery coming from proud parents Eaves, Drexler and Zimmerman. Thus far, all we have is:
quote:
When asked about the design of the new (old?) Enterprise, John said it was smaller then Kirk's, but that they're still working on it, so the exact size hasn't been established.
One guess per person, and no post editing. Guesses should be whole numbers, in meters, and a discrete value rather than a range. And don't repeat the exact same number as someone else.
Closest wins. In event of a tie, the two people will split the prize. The prize is nothing, thus facilitating easy splitting.
Finally, for reference's sake, Kirk's Enterprise (pre-refit) was 289m long.
Place your bets.

How did I know Frank would go with what he did...

Anyhoo, I'll pitch my bid in for 190 metres.

My guess: 156.7 m
However my bid would place a reasonable size around 100 meters... however knowing TPTB we'll probably get one that's 10, 100, 1000, and 10000 all at the same time.

But we could also start a new pool on 'the likelihood of being told virutally no information whatsoever on the Enterprise in the first ep'.
quote:
Guesses should be whole numbers, in meters, and a discrete value rather than a range.
I'm also wagering that Eaves carries through his sleekness paradigm that he used on the E-E to Series V. Thus, the Pre-E will be just a bit shorter, but overall smaller in size and volume, just as the E-E was to the E-D (granted, the E-E was longer, but you get what I mean). [head spinning at all the E's...] Mark
And while the idea of a really small ship is certainly a possibility, the fact that they're filling three soundstages with sets seems to be a strike against that. Besides, what would Star Trek be without redshirts? Nonetheless, should Mr. Omega choose to submit a small figure for length, it will most certainly be welcomed.
Shik: I believe the answer to your question's in my original post. Andrew: Eaves is a hugeass TOS fan. No worries there. So give me a number already. [ June 12, 2001: Message edited by: The_Tom ]

And if you get within 2m I'll give you both showcases.
I highly doubt that ship will be no larger than the E-nil. I also highly doubt the ship will be the size of a runabout.
You have exactly 24 hours to put in final bets, or less if the TV Guide poster leaks first. At which point the incessant scaling dicussions will kick in. We won't crown a champion until we get an "official" figure from the horse's (Eaves) or the pony's (Drexler) mouth.. Put me in for 130m for the Big Pre-E.

Has it occured to anyone that this might be something totally different from what we're familiar with? What if these seven officers are the only crew aboard? Why not? Then we'd be dealing with some sort of glorified runabout, no bigger than an Akira.
Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :
As I recall, the Big-E is 289m, so my Pre-E guess is a hair shorter at 280. In any case, I'm sure it will be longer than ths largest estimates at the Defiant's size, i.e. > 170m.
Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :
Omega: Well, even by Frank's rather minature estimate of an Akira's length, Akiras are hardly glorified runabouts.
Posted by Tech Sergeant Chen (Member # 350) on :
Might as well boldly go between a couple of other guesses. 180m.

What do we get when we win?
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
I'm not a "fraction-touting joker". I chose 112.776m because it's 370 feet. The Trek VFX people seem to prefer lengths in feet, so I figured it would probably be a round number of feet, and thus a fractional number of meters.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
You didn't include my length... something GREATER than 289m, cause well, I'm sure they don't care what the original length of the Enterprise was.
Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :
Tim: Yup, I was well aware that designs have been traditionally done in feet. But if you picked 113m it would be impossible for anyone to beat you if the ship was 370 feet. So nyah and double-nyah.

Put me in for 161m

BTW, I'm guessing that the contestant that comes closest to the actual length without going over gets a chance at the showcase showdown..?
Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :
Mark Nguyen, come on down! You're the next contestant on "The Length Is Right"!
Posted by The_Tom (Member # 38) on :
Luckily, in this situation, it's closest to the actual retail length but you are allowed to go over.
Posted by Matrix (Member # 376) on :
I chose 23.5 meters becuase a half meter helps alot
Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :
137m compressed. I think/hope there's gonna be some kinda variable geometry thing happening which may affect the craft's overall length...

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :
Yeah, I chose it first! Although now I'm thinking it's way too large. . .

Okay, here is new my bet: 650ft/198m (or 198.12 to be exact).

I just got the Star Trek Communicator with the large NX01 on the cover
I count somewhere between 7-9 decks, but thats just above the saucer plane (its a top view) its likely we have a lower pod with the sensory and ordnance like the 1701. that would add 2-4 more decks giving us a possible 12 decks, and the width of the saucer looks to be a little bigger than 3/4 the 1701 saucer (going by the bridge size) this means about 125-150m saucer bringus into a 200+ length. i havent put a ruler or calculator to the damn thing though im just eyeballing. will scan it for show later....
