Hmmn...
Wasn't there some old FASA thing or something claiming space stations had registry numbers?

Remember how in Franz Joseph's Tech. manual, there were diagrams of a shuttlecraft which said "Starbase One" on it, but still had an NCC?

Remember how the shuttle from "Trials and Tribble-ations" had a reg of NCC-K7?

Does anyone remember?

Hmmm... Anyone got TOS "Court-Martial" readily available? Maybe we can check that for exterior shots of Starbase 11's shuttlecraft?

The shuttlecraft that Admiral Janeway takes in "Endgame" had SC-4 written across the hull. I guess that means either Starfleet Command Shuttle 4 or Starfleet Communications Shuttle 4.

Starbases having some sort of a registration scheme may not be all that important since the names of the stations don't change, the positions of the stations (saving orbitting stations and Deep Space 9) don't change, and starbases are more permanent fixtures than starships. Still, who knows?

Maybe this means the shuttle from "Caretaker" (NCC-71235) was stationed at DS9? Probably not, bt just a thought.

Erm... I don't think they showed any shuttles in "Court Martial". And the base itself doesn't have any markings on it.

Who said anything about "Court Martial"? I was asking if anybody remembered the non-canon bit about it. I just cited those other sources as a way of sying it might be possible...

Unless Siegfried has been posting with invisible electrons again.

I was just posting other possible episodes that had used shuttlecraft that were either dispatched from or assigned to starbases.

And, it's been a while since I saw "Court-Martial," but I know that in the first part Kirk and the starbase commodore had to use a shuttle to catch up to the Enterprise, which had been commandeered the Enterprise to take Chris Pike back to Talos VII. I'm just not sure if an exterior shuttle shot was used or not.

And remember, all electrons are invisible unless you have a really really really really really powerful microscope.

Am I the resident TOS 'expert'? Oy vey.

The episode is "The Menagerie, Part 1". This shuttlecraft has no markings on the starboard or bow. Her designation is: Shuttle 1.

Ah, hell. The Menagerie. I flubbed the title. At least I got the premise of the episode right. And it did have a court-martial in it. Therefore, I feel vindicated.

"Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" had a shuttle that was from Starbase 4. IIRC, it was labeled "Galileo.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Yeah. I don't think that the TOS VFX staff ever bothered to re-label the shuttle model for any purpose (other than the Ent's shuttles), since it was always only a small part, and often they just used stock footage. So I think it always will say either Galileo, Galileo II, or Columbus.

Hey, isn't the formal designation for the TOS shuttlecraft 'Type F'? I can't remember what the episode was, but I think a one-liner called it 'Type F' but I haven't heard the term used much, and it's not in the Encyclopedia.

There were at least three models for the shuttlecraft: two miniature and a full size mock-up.

Miniature One
This miniature is labeled as "Galileo NCC-1701/07". There was footage produced of the shuttlecraft leaving the USS Enterprise hangarbay. The first use is in "Galileo Seven", and the first use of the first use footage is in "Galileo Seven". The registry of the "Columbus" is not known.

Miniature Two
This miniature is seen only one time, in the episode "The Menagerie, Part 1". She is "Shuttle 1". There are no markings on her hull. The Enterprise computer identifies the shuttlecraft as a Starbase shuttlecraft, class F.

Full size mock-up
This is first seen in "Galileo Seven". For the first and second years, the shuttlecraft is labeled "Galileo NCC-1701/07". In the third year, the shuttlecraft is labeled "Galileo II NCC-1701/07".

The registry of the Columbus is NCC-1701/02, targetemployee.

And you've got that from?

Anyone else think it was weird that the Galileo had to get destroyed TWO times before it's replacement got called Galileo II? (Hang on! That's an idea! Perhaps ships were only considered new versions when the TWO previous versions were destroyed. Therefore, the NX-01 and NCC-1701 are the same ship so it doesn't count and everyone's happy! Or something...)

"Maybe this means the shuttle from "Caretaker" (NCC-71235) was stationed at DS9? Probably not, bt just a thought."

Tsk. Everyone knows that shuttle was a shapeshifter. How else did it's registry flip between NCC-71235 and NCC-1701-D between shots?

I'm not up on shuttle-types, but was it the TNG shuttle? Or the original Voyager type shuttle? If it's the later, I can't see why it would have NCC-1701-D on it. If it's the former, where did NCC-71235 come from? Perhaps the shuttle was marked as that for the final scenes from Generations. Which means...we can figure out the Miranda's registration (it's far too high to be an Oberth, but the Miranda is obviously some magical ship that disobeys all known laws, so that's okay).

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

Or maybe--gasp--they just got a TNG shuttle and put a registry on it that was thought up at the moment.

Posted by targetemployee (Member # 217) on :

Columbus' registry is conjecture. The only known footage of this shuttlecraft is a reuse of stock footage for the Galileo.

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

Well, the Encyclopedia says its Shuttle #2, and I believe that.

Posted by Michael_T (Member # 144) on :

And the encyclopedia says an Oberth visually identified in TNG is actually an Olympic Class.

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

Argh!!!! No more discussions on Encyclopedia officialness! Create a forum for it! I know the Biko is Oberth! I believe the Columbus is shuttle 02, and that is that! No one can stop me from believing that!

*Takes a breath*
Ahhhhh...

General Veers deserves a promotion!

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

To what? The only rank above General is the Soviet one of "Marshal."

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Well then, here’s to 'Marshal' Veers!

FWIW, Veers was a Major-General in ESB.

Just curious... Was Janeway's shuttle Starfleet property at all, or a civilian vessel? I didn't see obvious Starfleet markings, but there was a UFP emblem prominently visible, right?

As for the "Caretaker" shuttle, there are two possibilities. Either the people who shot the scenes cared a LOT about the scene: hence, they invented a rationale for why Stadi would be flying around in a shuttle, instead of giving Paris a turbolift ride to the ship - "this shuttle is coming from another ship that brough Paris here, since his parole proceedings took so long he couldn't accompany the Voyager"; they also invented a new rego for the ship and her shuttle, and finally did that little in-joke with the brief NCC-1701-D rego.

Or then they did not care at ALL: hence, they at first filmed the shuttle using an off-the-shelf, NCC-1701-D-labeled model; and only when nagged on the issue by somebody else did they decide to relabel the shuttle for close-ups, without bothering to ask HOW exactly it should be relabeled.
