Why is it that the various Enterprises have "x-th to bear the name" while other ships which have a name used on a previous ship (like the USS Defiant on DS9) do not have this little tidbit written on the plaque? It seems to me that it would be obvious that NCC-1701-E means the name Enterprise was used before while NCC-74205 does not. Thoughts?

The plaque's SHOULD day "nth ship to bear the registry and name", since the only distinction is that all Enterprises have the 1701 number.

Well, maybe the Enterprise is just THAT special...

The Enterprise is very special. In fact, I think they should do a series set on a ship named Enterprise again. 8)

IIRC correctly, the Defiant on DS9 had a plaque that says (among other things) "First Starship of Her Class".

If it wasn't the Defiant, I know that there was a prototype ship that had that line on her plaque. The distinction of being the class ship would seem to be more important than the distinction of being another ship named Defiant.

U.S.S. MELBOURNE * EXCELSIOR CLASS * SECOND SHIP TO BEAR THE EXACT SAME REGISTRY [Roll Eyes]

IIRC the Relativity had "Seventh ship to bear the name" on the plaque which is odd because it should be "Eight ship to bear the name".

Didn't we agree that, by that time, they had changed the alphabet to explain that away? [Big Grin]

They might have revamped the Alphabet by getting rid of 'C'.. its redundant.. use 'S' or 'K' instead. Same with 'X' you can achieve an 'X' by combining 'ks' or using a 'X'..

It would be a nice touch to have the script say Kaptain Brakston

Maybe it should say the "nth starship named 'Enterprise' as seen so far." The whole "Enterprise" TV show stuffs that wording up - that is currently on the plaque. Unless, yes it is only 1701-x Enterprises. This would cover why there is no "nth starship to bear the name Defiant" or "nth starship to bear the name Intrepid" - although we know there have been at least 2 3 Defiants and 3 Intrepids. Though they have all been of different registries... except now the Defiant - let me just fix that above...

Well, to be fair don't most of the plaques on the Enterprises imply its the nth Federation starship to bear the name.. the NX-01 isnt Federation.

Well after "Enterprise" one would have to expect this. Actually before it - cause of the shuttle and the spaceship and the sailing ship etc. Does the plaque say "starship" or just "ship"?

not sure about the plaque, but i was disappointed because 'starship' should be a 23rd century term, IMO, but Archer was saying it as early as the 2nd,3rd,4th episodes as i recall

As far as Enterprise's dedication plaque goes, it simply says "Enterprise" followed by "Spacecraft Number NX-01" followed by "Jonathan Archer, Commander" followed by a massive list of people. The plaque makes no reference to "starship" or even that Enterprise is the first of the NX-class.

My thinking is that the "second to bear the name" on the plaque and whole registry suffix thing were originally just a once-off thing for the 1701-A to cash in on the Federation's Enterprise "hype" post-Genesis/Whale Song incidents. And then the next ship named Enterprise had to be NCC 1701-B with a "third to bear the name" line regardless of who its captain was and whether or not high expectations were placed on it because it would look bad as the honour had already given to 1701-A. And from there it became an Enterprise-only tradition.

Nice try but that doesn't work:

quote:

U.S.S. RELATIVITY
Starfleet registry NCV-474439-G Wells-class timeship
Seventh ship to bear the name University of Copernicus
United Federation of Planets
