It seems to me that it would be obvious that NCC-1701-E means the name Enterprise was used before while NCC-74205 does not. The whole "Enterprise" TV show stuffs that wording up - that is currently on the plaque. Unless, yes it is only 1701-x Enterprises. This would cover why there is no "nth starship to bear the name Defiant" or "nth starship to bear the name Intrepid" - although we know there have been at least <strike>2</strike> 3 Defiants and 3 Intrepids. And then the next ship named Enterprise <i>had</i> to be NCC 1701-B with a "third to bear the name" line regardless of who its captain was and whether or not high expectations were placed on it because it would look bad as the honour had already given to 1701-A.
