Just what ever was the deal w/this? I've heard numerous people say that Rick Sternbach said it in a newsgroup post, and numerous people say it's a myth. I think I remember it being brought up once here a long time ago, but as I recall it was dismissed without any conclusive discussion.
Does anyone have the facts?

The fact is that we've never seen the Intrepid or her registry on screen in any form. So, it could be just about anything..
However, I do believe that Sternbach did want to round off the Intrepid's NCC at 74600... This was mentioned I think in a Starlog article some time ago.

For quite some time, it was common knowledge that Sternbach had mentioned in rec.arts.startrek.tech that the USS Intrepid's number was 74600. Then someone actually asked him, and he said he had no idea where that number came from.
So it's a lie, but an entertaining lie. And in the end, isn't that the real truth?
The answer is no.

What about Mark's Starlog article? Is this a fiction as well?

The one that had a link to the MajorBarcalow Fan Club and a quote from the good Major. He thought it was unnecessarily long.

I wonder what gave him that impression...

That's not entirely true. I didn't delete it because of its length. I asked you to remove it yourself because of its length. The reason I deleted it is because you wouldn't comply.

Well, I figured I get some sort of ultimatum like "Shorten your sig or I'll delete it" before you actually did anything.
But don't worry. I'll make sure not to count on it next time...
BTW, just what is the established maximum length signature one can have?? The FAQ page does not make any mention of this limit...

General internet etiquette, dating back to a time before many of us were born, suggests that, with few exceptions, a signature ought not be longer than the message it is attached to. [ January 29, 2002, 19:49: Message edited by: Sol System ]

Says Simon, posting a message barely 5 words longer than his signiture. And his sig takes up two more lines. Disgraceful.

I don't see why that is so insightful.
Er ... I mean, Sol's sig.

Perhaps it has a deeper meaning that one must ponder for a long while to decipher.
Being well-endowed downstairs apparently also helps. *shrug*
