What was the reason for naming that one ship after the city of Billings, Montana? Did someone from the production personnel come from there?

Who said they named it after some town at the end of the world? Did you never hear of Richard Billings, the inventor of freeze-dried curry-chicken? That was a revolution for the whole space industry! I wonder why they didn't name a whole planet after Richard Billings! [Smile]

Since when is Montana the end of the world?

Since First Contact when we saw that Montana is basically a large forrest with some post-apocalyptical barracks and a nuclear launch facility. [Smile]
But I agree that there has to be something important 'out there' since the town of Bozeman was important enough in the 24th century to name a ship. [Wink]

Brannon Braga is from Bozeman, Montana. Brannon Braga wrote or co-wrote "Cause and Effect", "Night", and First Contact.

Draw your own conclusions.

With the number of ships in service, I'm sure Starfleet has ships named after all sorts of obsecure things. Maybe there's a USS Mim running around somewhere.

or a USS Lollypop, USS Deerhunter, USS Rubber and so on.

Starfleet has more than 70,000 ships in 200 years in which the ships would be named about two to three times already. I find it unlikely that they would run out of names and reuse old ones like they have been doing for awhile. They should name some ships after famous leaders from the members of the Federation.

I don't know about the 70,000 ships, but they, TPTB, need to get some imagination in the naming of the ships..... If there are 150 members worlds then there should be a lot of names that they could use that would/could be considered off the wall.....

Amasov: I listed those three examples, because they were the introduction of the Bozeman, the introduction of the Billings, and the use of Montana as a setting, respectively.

Since it replaced Timbuktu, I'd reckon.

And Timbuk3..?
