Has anyone heard if there will be any new Federation ships in Nemisis? It looks like will have several new Romulan ships: Scimitar, Valdore,
updated Warbirds, and the fighter. Besides the new shuttle will there be anything new on the Federation side - possibly Riker's new command the Titan?

Thanks,
Richard Knapp

There's a jeep with panelling. (If you consider that a "ship")
Nice spelling of Nemesis BTW, nothing like a mispelled topic header [Smile]

Ouch! Thanks for the spelling check. [Wink]

The Scimitar and Scorpion Shuttle are Reman, not Romulan btw. The difference becomes obvious in the movie.

The online script of the movie mentions three new starships: The Titan (Riker's new command), the Hemingway (sent to tow the Enterprise back to Earth), and the Talos (Cmdr. Martin Madden's previous assignment). The jist of the script seemed to imply that these ships were only mentioned, not seen.

The shuttles could also be something romulan. Maybe they were transferred to the ship from one of Shinzon's Warbirds.

And who named that vessel "Talos"?! That's like hving a USS Cardassia or something. It not the name, but the connection that Talos isn't the nicest planet of the galaxy. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to command the USS Risa, either. [Smile]

USS Risa is fun. Think of the promiscuity!

Still, SOMEONE thought it would be a good idea to name a starship the Tian An Men, for a bloody massacre. So there IS some sort of precedent.

However, I think that the TNG era is friendly enough that they'd go and make nice with the Talosians. Last century, a starship visits some planet, finds some super-beings who're basically dying and wallowing in their decaying world. They beam down, have some nice hallucinations, and leave. What does Starfleet do? They forbid travel to that planet, under pain of DEATH! Eek!

No, I'm of the opinion that the Talosians a little more open these days, or at least the planet is no longer under some death penalty. It may even be a nice place for the galactic psychic fair...

There are 4 Taloses in Greek mythology.

Maybe there was a famous 22nd century scientist named Earnest Hitler, but you probably wouldn't mane a ship after him. There may be other Taloses in history, but the connection to this particular Talos is too strong, IMO.

Well, there is a precedent for naming ships after mythological names. Ajax, Agamemnon, Apollo, Odin, Hera, to name just a few.

Re: Hitler - And Malinche or Cortez would be quite low on my list for starship names, yet there they are...

Or Veracruz, yes. You could say "we don't mean that guy/place/whatever", but in the end you have the associacion. The question remains what is starfleet's policy for this sort of problem? It seems they accept names like your examples, but I don't think (and hope) those ships are named after the person we think (we have still 300 years to go, so maybe there'll be another person of that name who deserves this honor). Or history just made them forget the "historical tragedy" of the names.

Naming a starship after a noble and doomed stand for freedom does not strike me as being at all objectionable.

"All right boys, let's get that mane up on the saucer. There, stick one half on the dorsal, another on the ventral. It sure will flow nicely at warp speed."

In the Star Trek universe, yes, I'd like to think that the U.S.S. Cortez was named after Joe Cortez, the famous 23rd century Federation ambassador. But in the real world, it wasn't; we all know that it was named after Hernando Cortez. The above thinking is just us fans trying to be apologists for TPTB's farsighted thinking. We tend to do that a lot these days...

Maybe Hernando Cortez wasn't an "evil" conquistadore in Star Trek's Earth history.

Well that or the ship was named after a 23rd Century admiral. I do agree that some names shouldn't be used on a ship... a Galaxy Class USS Hitler would definately be out of the question. I'd consider a Galaxy Class USS Ron D. Moore before that name. At least TPTB aren't using names from pop culture in Star Trek... yet. Heaven forbid if I see a ship named USS P. Diddy with a Captain Shakira onboard going to a planet called Ozzyfesta.

From the RW point of view, USS Hitler of course wouldn't wash (and besides, there aren't too many people named Hitler around to create a more positive image for the name, since I believe German and Austrian officials just plain won't accept that as the name for a child any more).

But from the Trek point, who knows? They do have ships honoring people apparently from the Stalinist regime (the Zhukov and the Prokofiev at least). Perhaps they name ships on the principle of "let's never forget", like USS Tian An Men, not on the principle of "let's always honor".

For that matter, USS Thunderchild, if your definition of pop is not wed to any particular era.

Dukhat, Joe Cortez is the name of the host of the Retro Pop Reunion national radio show. not that id name it for him. now the U.S.S. Casey Kasem? *mwah*

Mybad. I guess I meant that the names aren't as blatant as say a tie in from the Austin Powers franchise or the Murder Inc. music group.

There, case closed. Can you think of anyone else more deserving of a starship being named after him than this guy? [Big Grin]

I figure if there can be a USS The Sullivan Brothers, then there can be a USS The Osbournes. . . 8)

That's just USS The Sullivans, no Brothers.

Adelphi
Newark, the Adelphi in TIN MAN was named after the town of Adelphi, MD (right outside of DC), where Dennis Bailey and David Bischoff (and I, at one point) live(d). It was not named after a theme.
