That's right! I get to see the Enterprise premiere tonight, and as part of my need to rub this in your faces, I will be resuming my weekly technology notations for each episode. Look for the writeup for "Shockwave Part II" tonight - depending on when I can get back from campus.

Stoopid thesis. Stoopid everything.

Spoiler warnings for all - and a reminder that when you post spoiler content on the forums, place at least one "$" at the BEGINNING of the topic title to warn peoples. Anyone want me to be looking out for anything specific?

How do you get it a day early???

How about a comprehensive answer?

There are (for presumably obvious reasons) no UPN stations in Canada, just as there are no ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX or WB stations. Canadian rights to all new shows get essentially dumped on the two Canadian networks at pretty ridiculously low prices. [This has a major effect on the whole battle to keep Canadian content on TV, but I digress.] So, the two major Canadian networks (CTV and Global) fill out their schedules relatively quickly with stuff from the four major American networks. That leaves the shows on the American netlets (UPN and WB) to be picked up by the CHUM/CITY media conglomerate, a smaller player with only a handful of affiliates that collectively reach only two markets: Southern Ontario and Southwestern BC. They airing it at the moment at the usual UPN time on its two CityTV stations in Toronto and Vancouver, and then on their nation-wide specialty cable station "Space!" on the weekends.

Now, just as in the states, if there isn't a nearby UPN affiliate in a particular area, any TV station can make a pitch to grab the show and show it in first-run syndication, which usually means slotting it in at some time on the weekend after its already aired on UPN. A-Channel, which is in fact three locally-oriented stations owned by Craig Broadcasting (a rising specialty cable player) reaches the cities of Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, and it has first-run syndication rights to Enterprise. For whatever reason, they've managed to slot time for Enterprise in Calgary and Edmonton shortly after the satellite wildfeed so that it can be seen on the Tuesday evenings before it airs everywhere else. Winnipeg is still the normal Wednesday time, I think. And on the East Coast some other station has syndication rights to Enterprise but it doesn't air it at a particularly exotic time.

Okay, as long as it wasn't a long winded answer, like, he lives in Canada and they air it before UPN...

With the Wings in this area I will be reduced to waiting till Saturday.... For years it has interupted Trek for me on Wednesdays.....

Thus why I HATE hockey....

Well, I was going to say MAGICAL POWERS. But Tom's answer is just as good...

We've used MAGICAL POWERS for a bit too long, though. It was time to enlighten the unknowing ones. And, to be honest, we were in the habit of writing "he lives in Canada and gets it before UPN" every week last year, and that got a bit boring.

In a similar, yet not at all similar vein, Calgary TV sucks.

Meh, all the critical stuff is on Calgary TV. For example: Trek, JAG, and 24 are all in a 3-hour block tonight (24 starting up in a week or two).

And to qualify - US syndie stuff in Canada is insanely cheap ONLY if you can fulfill the CRTC's content rules. That is, for every US show in the regular program, there must be one corresponding show that is at least 50% Canadian content. This is why we got five years of Earth: Final Conflict, why Mutant X will run for two years, and why Andromeda will continue to be made as long as Sorbo wants to do it.

On the plus side, it's also why SG-1 manages to maintain such a relatively high quality level for its comparatively tiny budget.

You don't have to live in Canada to see the episodes before official airing. But you need a satellite dish with a diameter between six and ten feet. [Big Grin]

According to the local TV listings, it doesn't look like ENT is airing here anymore. Not within the next couple of weeks, anyway.

If you have Bell ExpressVu service, you can be anywhere in Canada and get A-Channel, like here in the maritimes [Smile]

And because I live in the Maritimes, ENT airs at 11 pm my time, so I'd be the more likely candidate to do early writeups and such, seeing as where there'd be nothing barring my watching of the episode at that time (unless the weather's bad or something [Wink] )

Awesome episode. We got to see the very first Jeffries tubes (only Hoshi could fit in them). A new Vulcan ship was seen, as well. It seemed like it was the Haven ship with the globe removed and a Vulcan warp ring put in there instead. There was no technology in the 31st century that we saw. Archer and Daniels managed to make a time-portal-window thingy with Archer's scanner, communicator, some copper and other stuff. In conjunction with Daniels's magic PADD, Archer was able to get back to the 22nd century.

On a non-tech note, it seems as though by Daniels's time the Federation has fallen, or been absorbed into a new, bigger organization. There was supposedly a monument commemorating the Federation. In the library, Archer found a book: "The Romulan Star Empire", to which Daniels grabbed the book and said "Maybe it's best you don't read that." [Big Grin]

Here we go! SPOILERS, yo!

[Editted to clean up some spelling. Written during commercial breaks]

-Nothing new in the opening sequence. Bakula does the "Last time on Enterprise" narration. I do hope they change the title sequence at at least one point during the course of this show - Voyager's titles did get kinda dry after a while. They can keep the song. [Wink]

-As the Suliban start to board the ship, a cell pod (with Silik aboard?) actually docks at the starboard hatch, instead of using the shuttlebay as expected. We've pretty much established that the starboard hatch is used for alien ships, and the port for standard / Vulcan ships; this seems to continue proving that theory. Cell ships are also shown docked in a pearl necklace formation, as we've seen on the Helix.

-That's one hell of a library CGI set.

-Contrary to previous romours, Enterprise is NOT three days overdue for her first return home; rather, she's that long overdue for her rendevous with the Vulcan ship scheduled to pick up T'Pol and Phlox. The Vulcan ship is called the D'kyr (spelling via CC), and is ordered to find them.

-Enterprise is commandeered and taken back to the red Helix. Oddly enough, the Helix sets are very well lit this time.

-That unnamed Starfleet commander from the pilot is back, mostly to be someone to argue with Soval, along with Admiral Forrest. Though this guy has had next to no lines, wouldn't it be cool if he'd eventually show up as the Captain of Starfleet's next warp 5 ship?

-The temporal toilet the plot went through had TONS of stuff messed up. Silik can't contact FutureGuy. Earth is toast, and that library is filled only with BOOKS - one of which is titled "The Romulan Star Empire"...

-The Suliban interrogate T'Pol. It's nice to see that while they left Klaang fully clothed, they felt the need to strip T'Pol to her undies to do exactly what they did to the Klingon.

-Hoshi and Travis's quarters are on C Deck, while Trip and Malcom are up on B. Senior officer's quarters, perhaps?

-Hip, stylish points - the sink in at least T'Pol's quarters is of that funky, anachronistic style that looks like a bowl on a shelf. Also, T'Pol's pants are suddenly those low-cut hiphangers that've come into style in the past couple of years. They serve to show even MORE of her. Le sigh...

-With Archer's communicator and scanner (he calls is a scanner), Daniels is able to rig a primitive temporal communicator. Go go, MacGyver!

-FutureGuy comes from somewhere in the 28th century. They have the ability only to project fuzzy images of themselves into the past. This is somewhat inconsistent with established time travel we've seen beforehand... People have been seen to travel in time themselves, fairly precisely, from times as near as only a few decades from the TNG timeframe.

-Hoshi crawls through some air ducts at one point on the way to losing her top (why was she wearing civvies that can conveniently fall off, anyway? It's not like they're any more form-fitting than her uniform). And she brings a flashlight, despite the fact that the ducts are needlessly well lit.

-Suliban guns are somewhat more detailed this time around, and rifles show up. Oddly, pistols of the same kind are different shades of brown. They're also mottled.

-Daniels keeps the temporal stuff in his quarters in his locker. And I mean IN it! There's some sort of TARDIS-like panel in the locker door.

-The ends of the arms on Archer's chair can swing out a little bit, so the displays on the ends of them can "surround" the occupant a little. You see it pop out when Reed is thrown over it. [Wink]

-As part of the plan, the temporal dohickey in the TARDIS compartment is eventually captured by the Suliban. Silik, who had spent most of the episode trying to contact FutureGuy, puts the dohickey on the platform. Lo and behold, out pops Archer! Who knows if this is a function of the temporal platform, or if the dohickey did it, but that's how Archer got back.

-Also as part of the plan, Enterprise fakes a core breach in a spectacular pyro display to escape. It looked REALLY cool and convincing, but one wonders how much damage they actually did to the nacelles to do it.

-There's a pitched chase scene that follows, as Enterprise tries in vain to escape. It was spectacular and highly visual, and Enterprise took a real pounding (but is doubtless going to be okay for next week, or until that mine shows up). Oh, and they fired the phase cannons at warp during the fight.

-The D'kyr looks WAY COOL!!!!!!!! It's a new Vulcan design, and is significantly different than what we've seen before. Imagine that Tarellian plague ship from "Haven", without the glowey sphere, but with a Vulcan warp ring stuffed in there instead. And corresponding to what I said above, they dock at the port hatch. Actually, the resemblance to the Tarellian ship may not be coincidental... It REALLY looks like it.

-Resolution: The Vulcans still wanted to axe Enterprise's mission, but T'Pol's "over the top" speech saved the day and convinced the Vulcans to reneg. Enterprise warps off, apparently pristine.

Whew! I'll probably add more after a re-watch, but I gotta watch the JAG season finale now. [Wink] This was a pretty good episode, though it resolved a relatively simple plot with more action than story. Ah well, next week seems to make up for it.

William(s), Leonard and (De)Forest were a reference to Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley

Daniels learned how to build a temporal communicator back in high school, where every desk has a quantum discriminator!

On the rewatch, I noticed what must be the first real FX bumble on the show. In the last two FX shots that show Enterprise being pasted by the Suliban, note that phase cannon blasts are being fired at cell ships ABOVE the saucer. In the shot that we look at Enterprise from behind, we see one or two emission points that may be on the fore dorsal of the saucer, though these MAY be the two ventral mounts.

However, in the shot following, we see blasts erupting from the two plasma venting doodads on the dorsal side of the catamarans, AND from a port ventral mount corresponding to the aft starboard ventral we've seen before. I guess that these may also be explained away as weapons added when we weren't looking, but if a future episode says again that they only have three cannons, then...

Oh yeah - at the begining of the show, Reed orders security teams to docking ports 1-3. Where's the third?

Maybe "Docking port 1" is the dropbay. Remember there are two additional bays behind the two they use for the shuttles.

Okay, this is just stupid. Although I like seeing beautiful women in revealing outfits just as much as the next guy, I'm really not interested in seeing that on Star Trek. At this rate, by the final season T'Pol's uniform will consist of a tank-top and thong. And I really have to wonder just how much Linda Park actually enjoyed her topless scene. Very little, I suspect. And why did she go to Reed's quarters? She couldn't go to her own quarters to get a shirt, which was only one deck below?

You mean they finally fixed a broken system--- money can't make crap something besides crap.

On topic: It sounds like half of the episode is going to be full of needless nudity or semi-nudity. Why? The other half of the episode sounds like it is going to be filled with overly incredibly deus ex machine plot lines [building a time portal device from spare parts type thing]. Why?

The only interesting part to me from the spoiler seems to be where Archer finds that Romulan book... and that's only because of the irony of it.

Although this is a fan-made wallpaper, it nicely shows the aft docking port, which I assume would be #3. Plus it looks really cool.

People gripe over T'Pol and Hoshi showing some skin. Do you people forget about all the attractive women in TOS? All the skin they showed (a lot for the 60's, I'd imagine)? How many women Kirk banged? Seems to me that Enterprise is returning to this trend. For all we know, Gene was a dirty old horndog that wanted to see lots of women in revealing clothing. [Smile]

Re: the Suliban communications/transporter(?) pad...

I'm guessing that FutureGuy doesn't want to actually risk traveling back in time whenever he needs to send instructions, and instead just uses communications. It's more convenient.

Of course, that doesn't explain why it could double as a transporter pad for Archer. And is Daniels now stuck in a desolate 31st century on his own?

Posted by Mucus (Member # 24) on :

I think Mark Nguyen pointed this out, but it bears repeating. There could potentially be something very significant about the fact that FutureGuy was wiped out along with the Federation when Archer was removed.

This indicates several possibilities, among them:
a) FutureGuy can only exist if the Federation exists...curious
b) FutureGuy is someone that will be saved or created by Archer
c) FutureGuy is Archer

*shrug*

I imagine that you would need rather thin females to fit in a book in the first place. But jokes aside, Linda Parks is probably right there in the lower range of the BMI, especially when you consider the fact that Asians on average have less trunk space than Americans. Either your perspective has been skewed by the fact that a large majority of North Americans are either overweight or obese.....or because she doesn't have inflatable breasts.

Actually, Daniels states at one point that people three centuries ago (28th century? assuming he's from the 31st) can't travel back in time....but can send messages back.

This was a odd anyways, considering that Kirk was doing time travel back in the 23rd century. *shrug*

Easily explained. She (from my perspective) dropped out of the air shaft on B deck. With a ship boarded by Suliban soldiers, it'd make since to complete her mission (getting to one of the senior staff's quarters) rather than walk through the halls and stairs for modesty's sake. Reed was probably closest to her exit point and everyone has to have a spare shirt laying around. And it's not like she exposed anything -- just her back and stomach.

I'll comment on the rest of the episode in the proper forum. [Smile]

Parts of the episode I had problem with:

Daniels made a time/holoimage projector with live feed communication from a communicator, some twigs, and some rubber bands? and ....what da hell???
He's like some future recarnation of mc'guyver!

Ok Archer asks t'pol where is the Ent after it been towed into the Suliban controlled nebula.
If Archer didn't know the coordinates, how did he manage "show" up in image form on the ENT and in T'pol's quarters?

Exactly what is the device that brought Archer back?
If it was Reed who activated it with Archer's instructions, I can understand. But Silick was the one who opened up the gateway by pushing random buttons....he obviously don't know what he was doing or what the device was, yet somehow he managed to transport Archer back? When he didn't know where Archer was to begin with.

Where did the hull breaches on the Ent go!?!?!
I assumed they were patched up, even the Vulcans could have helped. But just like Voyager, they didn't even bother with a line drop about repairs.

Future Guy is from the 28th century, 300 years before Daniels time.

Well this is a somewhat technological question.
In Shockwave part 2, the Ent fired her "phasers" and obliterated a Suliban ship while being pursued at warp speed.

Didn't Reed in Shockwave I said they couldn't fire the weapon while at warp?

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

Good question. I just saw "Shockwave, Part I" for the first time two weeks ago. If they did say that, it's a bigger problem than just a visual effects mistake.

What I'm wondering about is when Hoshi's quarters ended up on C Deck. I thought the guy she was trading with in "Fight or Flight" was on E Deck (which she was on at the time as well).

For a sizable majority of the population, I'd say yes.

Anyway, as I recall, Reed was worried that firing the phase cannons would somehow destabilize the warp field, but he didn't say that it was a physical impossibility. They didn't seem to have time to go about correcting the problem, though.

And, personally, I think it should be impossible. Yes, ok, so everyone and their brother could fire energy beams at warp in TOS, sure. But that doesn't mean it makes much sense. I'm willing to except it as being possible with some fancy "jacketed subspace annular confinement doodad" combined with being close enough to "synch the warp field cosine yadda and so on" (thus conveniently explaining why everyone gets so close). But, you know, this is supposed to be the past and all.
