Hi List I was wondering if anybody could give me a reason why the Uss Constellation has the hull number that it has, is there a canon reason for it? The reason that I ask is that the Doomsday machine is my favorite out the TOS. Just wondering and thanks ;-)

Hey Rev, don't bogart that joint...
In all seriousness, our 'lil spud buddy here (He's from Idaho, I believe, that explains a lot )deserves a serious explaination, and I will be that fair.
I believe the urban legend goes: that the Constitution Class ATM model they used rearranged the 1-7-0-1 of the USS Enterprise to 1-0-1-7 for the USS Constellation.
1710 would have been a better choice for the canon-balls who demand perfection of the chronological/sequential registry list but I don't think the designers/writers of the time had us in mind when they designed it....

Yah... sadly this appears to be a screw up on the part of the model makers. I've never heard a good Trek explanation for it.
Maybe it's an issue of special dispensation given to the Constellation to keep an old registry. Though I'm of the belief that no two ships ever have the same registry (thus the -A, -B, etc. for the Enterprises)

Well, we do have the Sao Paulo/Defiant situation....

So the Constellation had a different number despite what a reuse of stock footage might suggest?

I think Sol was making a funny, because, as everyone knows, the Sao Paulo turned Defiant didn't *really* have the same registry number as the first Defiant even though it looked strikingly like it did on screen.
