A while back someone posted the original Reliant sketch with the nacelles on top, that was aproved by Harve Bennett except upside down.

I found that thread, but the scan is no longer on any webspace i can find.

does anyone have it?

Are you referring to the pics from the "Star Trek: The Magazine" article that coincided w/the release of the ST:TWoK SE DVD? If so, you can find scans of that page on my Project: Avenger page.

HTH,

Thanks a lot Jeffrey! [Big Grin] These drawings are very interesting in illustrating how a design evolves.

Thank goodness Harve Bennett approved an inverted version of the design. I think it looks rather silly with two ventral torpedo shrouds. I am glad that the art department rethought the design.

Not me. I like it that way and rather wish they'd built it in that configuration! Definitely more of a warship. That's why I'm in the process of building a model in that configuration. [Big Grin]

PS--

Is the name Reliant a joke on Ricardo Montalban? During the 1980s Ricardo Montalban was the spokesperson for Chrysler Motor Company and they produced an economy car named the Reliant K. The most memorable commercial that Montalban made was for the Chrysler Le Baron luxury car. In his distinctive voice he would talk about "Rich Corinthian leather." Friends of mine and I would joke that the Reliant had seats made of "Rich Corithian leather."

The timing checks out... the Plymouth Reliant was introduced in 1981. A bit of googling shows Montalban to have been the pitchman for the 1975-1979 Chrysler Cordoba (it had the Reech Corinthian Leather, not the Le Baron) and potentially other cars as well in the following years. Lee Iacoca's infamous ads for the K-cars at the time of their introduction probably meant that Khan himself never told the American public to buy a K-car, but some wag amongst the writers seeing the connection is certainly possible.

Simon will dispense some Dave Matthews and Hootie and the Blowfish medicine. Followed by some Erich Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra playing all of the good old Star Trek Tunes.

CHIPPING AWAY AT THE MYSTIQUE. ONE DAY AT A TIME. LIKE TODAY. BECAUSE IT IS A DAY. AND I HAVE USED UP MY QUOTA.

Ultra Magnus will one day lead an army of oppressed villagers against me, and I will be all "You!? But...together we could have ruled the world!" And he will say "I am sorry my friend, but you have gone too far." And then we will have a swordfight in my secret doomsday weapon laboratory, ending with me plunging into the active volcano I was intending to use as a power source. He will stand on the catwalk and stare down into the abyss, while the men and women he led to freedom will come to him and say "You have freed us! We should be rejoicing!" And they will not understand why he is so somber.

But will I really die in that pit of firey doom? Will I indeed.

I just hope it doesnt shoot torpedoes out of that lower pod...

Lower pods. One on each side of the nav dome. So what's the problem?

Posted by Griffworks (Member # 1014) on :

Nice rendering, Cap'n. Just a note, tho: you have the rounded "torpedo" shaped thing from the standard photorp pod there, which is incorrect for the primary concept drawings from the ST:Mag issue. It shows the two outboard pods as basically being the photorp deck area from the Refit "glued" back to back and filled out to more of a rectangular shape. The shape in the background in the one side-view from the image has pretty much got to be a "shadow" to show a possible single, centerline underside pod, as the aft and overhead views don't indicate the shape you portray. The three small hand-drawn images at the upper left of the one pic indicate what they were working towards, which dropped the centrally placed pod down a bit more to allow clearance of the lower sensor array. I'm glad they changed it to two outobard pods, as I feel it flows a bit better than w/on central pod.

Unless of course you were taking some artistic license and added that in. Nevermind if that's what you were goin g for. [Smile] I'd be curious to see a couple othere views, if that's the case.

And please ignore Jason. He was abused by a donkey as a small child and apparently is still being abused by other farm critters to this day.... [Wink]

I've long suspected you were a closet furry, Jeff. [Wink]
Leave me out of those fantasies, please.

The dome on the bottom of the saucer appears to be in the direct sight of fire where the torpedoes come out....as far as it looks on the side-view, that would appear to be a problem judging solely on that...

Yes, but unless you're not just playing dumb on purpose you'll have realised from the posts in this thread that there are TWO weapons pods, one on the port side and one on the starboard side. When they fire torps they will pass to the port and starboard of the lower nav dome. So no problem.

yeah, i did a rough trace of a possible front view and found no problem wth the forward firing arc. My sideview shows not the rough sketches from the design, but the refined pencil drawing that had two lower pods.. i made them to match the refit torp pods they resemble, and interpreted the other shape around it to be the 'fin' of the Miranda pod.. so no, my drawing doesnt have anything in the middle of them.
