Many years ago I saw a picture (perhaps in the old Star Trek Poster Magazine?) from the TOS episode Court Martial of Kirk standing behind a table at the court martial. He's in Dress Uniform and behind and to one side is a sky-blue flag. The caption for the picture identifies the flag as being the United Space Flag. In other episodes Kirk identifies his ship as the "United Space Ship Enterprise" which makes sense for the U.S.S. I think United Earth has been acknowledged as a government in the TOS era; would United Space be the next level up in the government hierarchy of that era?

BTW Anyone have an image as described above?

Uh... that all came before the writers firmly established the United Federation of Planets as the primary government of Trek. Unless you want to drive yourself completely mad, I suggest you ignore other references and assume they really say "Federation." [Razz]

I'll accept that, but it still seems reasonable that their would be a heirarchy of goverments, not just planetary goverments and then the Federation. It also makes the U.S.S. make more sense. I think it was pretty clear in TOS that the Star Fleet was a human institution, not something created after we joined the galactic club.

Nah, I value my insanities. I also take at face value what they say. Not very interesting and certainly no fun otherwise.

Except that the obvious intention was that the Federation had existed since well before the beginning of the show. I'm not sure how that makes anything "uninteresting."

Although early TOS claims the Enterprise is operated by a United Earth, the later-invented Federation was supposed to have been there all along.

Confusingly, TAS and early TMP drafts call it the "Earth Federation".

Heh, even by St: VI, it's still refered to as a 'Homo Sapiens Only club'

Present company excepted.
