In the turbolift alcove of the TOS Enterprise, there is a red on black graphic panel on the left hand side that has a plan and side elevation of the ship. The shapes are all wrong, and it bugged me for years. Relating to the Starship Class discussion, could this be the original configuration of the Enterprise when built, perhaps as Capt. April knew her?

It's a graphic that Matt Jeffries did for the original configuration of the ship during the concept phase of the series - when it was supposed to be about half the length we know it to be now (947ft). I believe this is mentioned in "The Making of Star Trek", but might be wrong. That version of the ship only contained about 8 decks, I believe, and what we know of as the "B/C Deck" was going to contain the bridge, IIRC.

Perhaps related to this diagram...

...that appeared on a small bridge screen (and moved to Auxilliary Control in "Day of the Dove").

That's a very interesting thought. Precedent for such a notion occurs in ST3, when Chekov's security screen shows the ship in TOS configuration.

To be sure, I don't like the idea that the utter failure to update records of the ship's structure is common, but otherwise it's an interesting notion.

be surprised how often that occurs in RL...

Hi all. This is my first post, so go easy on me.

Perhaps we could explain this "inaccuracy" within the context of the show by saying that because it specifically denotes "hull pressure", then not ALL decks, etc. are shown, but rather ONLY those COMBINED decks where this "hull pressure" data would be of use to know.

Too much of a stretch? [Roll Eyes]

I'd buy that, except that it doesn't quite explain why the secondary hull is far bigger than it should be. Good try though.

Perhaps this is what the ship looks like when fully pressurized? [Razz]

It's a pressure diagram. Probably made by mathematicians. They don't care about the physical reality. Hell, they'd rather have made a screen of incomprehensible numbers out of it, but Starfleet's console usability guidelines demanded a pretty diagram.

Actually the physicians are crazy about diagrams, my Physics manuscript has more sketches than a drawing book. If that was done my mathimaticians, it wouldn't have a sketch at all...

That's because mathimaticians are mole-people with no eyes and can only communicate via numbers and the squeak chalk makes on a blackboard.

Physicians are medical doctors. Physicists study physics.

I've also heard that they don't need sleep and only can survive on coffee and biscuits.
