Screenshot from DS9 6x05 "Favor the Bold" - a sweeping shot of the fleet assembling at Starbase 375. I have some doubts about some of the ship classes...

I think the ones highlighted in blue are Centaur-class; what do you guys think? I'm not sure at all about the one in green because it's hard to see, but I think it's a Miranda...as for the ones in red, I have no idea, but I've seen them a lot in DS9. Can anybody tell me what they are? The shot's from season 6 "Favor the Bold."

Oh - for some reason the PNG is just appearing as a black field in Firefox even though it looks fine in Paint, so, if you can't see it, I'll upload a JPG instead...

Black and coloured boxes in IE.

Yep, just coloured boxes on a black background for me too (FF2)

Can't see the pic, but I can tell you that there was only one shot at SB 375 where the Centaur appeared, and it was in "Behind The Lines" (DS9). It was at the bottom right corner of the screen. The ships here are (probably) Mirandas.

Ha! We don't need to *see* the ships to ID them round these parts!

Nope not coming up for me. JPEG FTW.

Well. On this piece of crap machine, full-screen video shows through black pixels in other applications, even when it's minimized. So that explains why I thought it was OK in paint - the still freeze-framed video was showing through!

However, that means the print screen button isn't snapping the shot. So I tried to use VLC's built-in screen grabber - and it crashed VLC. So, bottom line, no screenshot :-/ *sigh*

Well, anyway, the ones in blue I was talking about mmmight be Mirandas, I suppose. And the ones I hadn't seen before, in red, were identified during the next episode as Federation fighters. So, thanks for your help, I guess this thread was pointless since I can't post a shot B)

However, if anybody has the DVD/AVI, the shot was at 27:42, give or take some seconds if you have a different file.

Pick it out from

I mean, like, if you want to...

Wow. The exact same shot, almost. The boxes might even line up correctly... (edit) Nope, not quite...

Excelsiors, Mirandas, Galaxys, the Defiant, and those fighters that most of us think are Peregrines. No Centaur.

As I said above, I'm 99.99999% positive that the ONLY appearance of the Centaur outside of "A Time To Stand" is in the opening shot here.

It's the ships arrayed along the top of screen that sort of looked like Centaurs to me.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Mirandas.

*holds hands up* OK, OK, they're Mirandas! [Razz]

I'm pretty sure a Centaur is in of of the 375 establishing shots, just not sure if it's this one. Muc easier to tell on a moving image than a still.

Yes, Rev, it's in the opening shot of "Behind The Lines" (DS9).

Ha, I remember way back, when someone did a great April Fool's using that shot, subsituting an Ambassador for that lone Galaxy heading towards the Starbase. . .

Posted by Toadkiller (Member # 425) on :

Was it ever stated what the starbase itself had in terms of weapons? DS9 ended up packing a pretty good punch, but I don't recall us seeing any other station defend itself.

Lee: There was an Ambassador in the background of that shot, though...so what was the April Fools joke about?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

No. There was not.

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

No, there definitely wasn't. Someone, it was almost ten years ago (the ep itself was quite recent at the time, and decent screencaps were hard to find), it might even have been Bernd, took that pic and modified it so it really WAS an Ambassador, and posted it on April Fool's Day.

The Galaxy in the upper right just looked really Ambassadorial to me, I guess. Anyway, just how many Galaxy class ships does the fleet have? There were 6 of them at the end of TNG, correct? But in the six-episode arc at the beginning of the season, about retaking the station, there seem to be multiple wings of Galaxies - although it could be that a "Galaxy wing" is just a wing led by a Galaxy-class. Still, we saw at least 4 Galaxies in one shot during that Big Fucking Battle Scene.

We've kicked that particular horse to death- the "Galaxy wing" thing certainly implies a grouping of ships led by a Galaxy class and not a whole squadron of them or whatever.

Someone pointed out that we never see more than five Galaxys at any given time (and only then in the Call to Arms grouping).

I'd think that the fleet would attack and defend in overlapping waves with a central ship leading a wing of destroyers, fighters and cruisers- probably the wing leader is the most powerful ship, carries the ranking officer and has the best command and communication abilities.
Also, no one of the command ships can wear those unseemly "manskirts" they showed on TNG's first season.

Hehe, I love it when real military tactical thinking slips into the fantasy of the Trek world [Smile]

Shame SWDAO doesn't exist anymore (or does it - must ask Frank next time he surfaces).

Everything formerly hosted at dgne isn't accessible anymore.... although I'm sure the Wayback Machine has it archived... Well, Frank might have it archived, too. I'll send him a FB message...

Do you really expect us to accept that as an excuse? [Razz]

No, it was mostly a "moral victory" type counter-argument to make myself feel better. [Razz]

Looks like the Wayback Machine has it covered, but I have all the files saved if anyone needs them.

(I can't believe that page is 9 years old! I feel so out of touch.)

9 YEARS - OMG.

What have I been doing all that time!?! [Smile]

Gosh. And what's more, it all still stands up pretty well.
