Has anyone seen the latest edition of the Drex Files? There's a fascinating tidbit in there. Doug found some camcorder footage that Gary Hutzel made when he brought in the Reliant model for use in "Unnatural Selection." This was the first time that the model was used since it appeared as the USS Saratoga in Star Trek IV.
There's always been some controversy about the Saratoga's registry number. It can almost be made out as the probe passes by. The Encyclopedia said that it was NCC-1937, but most other sources say NCC-1867. A few say NCC-1967.
It turns out they're ALL WRONG!
This video shows the model marked as the Saratoga, and around the 1:50 mark, you can clearly see the registry is NCC-1887. Imagine that.
(The video also reveals why the Lantree had no roll bar... Hutzel couldn't get its internal lights to work!)

I guess they never bothered to label the model Lantree either, considering it was only shot from behind. This would also explain why the Saratoga from the DS9 pilot also did not feature a rollbar, and why the Soyuz was created for TNG's "Cause and Effect".

I guess that's also why the Lantree's registry is 1837...you can clearly see where they covered up the left bit of the second "8" to make a "3."

And yet they restored it for the Brattain. Weird

Didn't we see the Brattain from the side? Maybe they felt from that vantage point, no one would notice it not being lit. But to be honest, looking at the ship in the TWOK, the lighting in the rollbar is minor, to the point I don't think it necessitated its removal in TNG.

I'm pretty sure it had a light on top of the torpedo pod.
Either way, I'm surprised the Reliant model was even used as the Brattain, requiring costly new filming for a ship that was just in one or two scenes. Considering it was acknowledged as a science vessel, and every science vessel to date in TNG was an Oberth, I'm not sure why they didn't just reuse the stock footage of the Cochrane.
BTW, the original page for the SWDAO is no more...does anyone still have the original list?

I honestly have no idea why trivial little things like this excite me so much, but yet...they do!!

Oh, hey. Sorry I'm late.

Was the rollbar auctioned off with the Reliant model? I cant recall... Man, that would be cool to have mounted on a wall, wouldn't it?

Wall? Please, you'd mount it as your headboard.
