Just curious. I am already all over this topic but wanted to get some extra opinions.

Given what we've seen of starships and descents into atmosphere, along with the recorded last moments of the Enterprise, what do you think happened to the ship?

I think there would be little of the ship that would have survived, mostly an unrecognizable mess of twisted metal and alloys. Of course, once Genesis went boom, everything would probably have been vaporized.

Serious answer:

100% agree with MNW. Between the self-destruct, the uncontrolled descent, the crash, and the planet blowing up, there'd be nothing left of the post-refit E-nil. Whether or not Starfleet saved any of the pre-refit ship prior to TMP is anyone's guess.

Not-so-serious answer:

As I revealed last year, my idea for Series ? was that the Genesis Effect would have restored the E-nil the same way it restored Spock, and made it sentient to boot.

I would hazard a guess that the self-destruct system as designed would make quick work of the ship itself.

Now, taking into consideration the damage from Khan, all the tomfoolery Scotty performed with the ship's systems to make it crewable by five, and the gravity fluctuations of Genesis, there is potential that large components of the ship soft-landed on the planet. That being said, the disintegration of the planet shortly thereafter (or even caused by the introduction of antimatter to the planet's unstable surface) would probably destroy whatever was left.

I agree with Fabrux, that something might have survived impact with the surface, but after the planet blew up, probably nothing. Maybe a few bits of debris could be found in all the rocks and stuff from the explosion of the planet, but that would be very unlikely.

Here's a crazy idea... since the Genesis planet regenerated Spock, could it regenerate ITSELF? Did anyone go back to check after it blew up? [Wink]
