------------------ ------------------ One might presume some parts commonality between the two ships, but their missions are different. The Constitution class is a cross between a science vessel and a battle cruiser. There's loads of lab space. The Aerie class is a glorified mobile hangar and repair facility for the small craft it carries. It's main "cargo" is the ships it carries (and the empty space needed to carry them), and the repair/maintenance facilities required to maintain them. The saucer is thicker to accomodate these requirements, but the engineering hull is larger (than the Constitution's) because many of the facilities that would've gone into the saucer on another ship had to go somewhere else, to allow enough space for the carrier functions. --Baloo ------------------ [This message has been edited by Baloo (edited February 08, 2000).]

Not bad. Would be better than the Constitution explosion in numbers.
7 alarm clock: "Do not touch me."
Dilbert: "Then how do I turn you off?"
7: "Believe me, I am plenty turned off."

I would have wished they had shown some modified Constitution class on at least one occasion in TOS, this would have justified the assumption that there is more than only the well-known Constitution. Building a carrier like Baloo's would have been a great idea, rather than adding or arbitrarily moving nacelles like in fandom.

The Aerie isn't a modification of the Constitution class. Rather, it's shaped that way because they used much of the same data to create the design (they wanted similar warp speed capability). It's about the same size because they wanted to re-use the "orbiting drydocks" used to construct the C-class, and that constrained the ship's dimensions.
