I'm drawing up blueprints for the Daedalus class and noticed that the Schematics printed in the Fact Files and a recent issue of the ST Magazine are quite different from the profile in the Encyclopedia. In particular, the neck in the newer schematics is attached at the top of the secondary hull whereas that in the encyclopedia attaches only about 3/4 of the way up. This attachment also makes the secondary hull much thinner to keep it below the nacelles. Which is correct? I don't want to cast aspersions on the accuracy of the magazine but I suspect it's wrong (again) in this case.------------------ When you're in the Sol system, come visit the Starfleet Museum

Well your best bet is to first see Greg Jein's model as seen in Sisko's office.Your second best bet is to consult Matt Jeffries' design sketches which Greg Jein based his model on. The Ency diagram is correct.------------------ Sheridan: "Well, as answers go, short, to the point, utterly useless and totally consistant with what I've come to expect from a Vorlon..." I wouldn't go quite that far. Comparing the diagrams to the only existing "canonical version", Sisko's tabletop ship ( http://w1.314.telia.com/~u31412332/misc/daed.htm ), the Encyclopedia diagram seems to have too narrow pylons and a far too narrow neck. The broader neck will take care of the discrepancies: the Encyclopedia and the FF/Magazine both have the lower edge of the neck roughly correctly positioned, but their differing interpretations on neck diameter mean the upper edge is not in the same place in all the diagrams.I wonder if the FF/Magazine had some inside info on the model, while Okuda or whoever only drew what he could see in the one well-known photo of the tabletop model. Window placement is one thing where the schematics differ a lot, too. Curiously, the Encyclopedia/Chronology 3d model seems quite correct in most respects, and is probably at least based on real photographs of the model instead of being a pure CGI guesstimate, but window placement and secondary hull front coloration and other such things seem different. I'm can't be sure, but I think that all the images of Daedalus class ships in the Chronologies are photos of the model (later appearing in Sisko's office) which were then modified in Photoshop. The model paint job might have changed between the photos in the chronology and its appearance on the show. The ships in the chronologies seems to have more windows than can be seen on the single side view photo in the Art of ST (especially along the neck) and matches the FF/Magazine schematics more in this regard. Windows, of course, could be added in Photoshop, as they were for other ship pictures. The lighted windows are almost certainly added in Photoshop since I doubt the model had internal lighting. The main problem with the FF/Magazine schematics and the resulting 3-D model is that the top of the primary hull is much too wide. It gives a sort of fluted look to the top of the hull. To me the encyclopedia schematic has the neck and, therefore, the head mounted too low. The photo of the model to the right of the encyclopedia schematic in Timo's linked page shows that the top of the secondary hull is well below the primary hull's equator. The encyclopedia schematic shows them almost at the same level. I'd have to measure the photos of the model to determine which schematic has the more accurate hull shapes, but the secondary hull in the Encyclopedia schematic looks taller and shorter.------------------ When you're in the Sol system, come visit the Starfleet Museum
