All right then. Since you want it SOOOOO badly, and since I'm not expending the effort to dig it up:

*I want to start off by admitting that the concept of this story is shockingly similar to that of the New Frontier books by Peter David. However, I came up with the idea independently, before I ever read those books. Truthfully.*

It's 5 years after the Dominion War.

The Romulan Empire, having used up most of its military resources during the War, and, due to its isolationism not being able to economically and politically recoup, has collapsed.

The Romulans have split into several squabbling factions, each of which is trying to gain power in its own way, including:
--- Old Imperialists
--- The Tal Shiar
--- The Unificationists
--- Petty Warlords and Pirates

The Orion Syndicate is moving in.

Various and sundry planets that were previously Romulan-subjugated worlds with servitor people, are rebelling, some seeking simply independence, some seeking to startup their own little Empires.

The mysterious unknown powers on the other side of Romulan space (What I assumes the Romulans to mean in "The Neutral Zone" when they spoke of 'matters of greater urgency caused our absence') are making subtle moves and overtures.

Into this cauldron, as an attempt to help create a little stability, while simultaneously gathering information in space that was previously a no-go area, is flung our heroes' starship, either a veteran of the Dominion Wars, or a ship that was constructed shortly thereafter. The older members of the crew are War veterans, the newer ones not much more than cadets. (This would reflect the losses suffered)

They are guided through this space by a Romulan or two on board, possibly including a garaklike character (cross Garak and Neelix?), any or both of whom may have agendas of their own.

Personal likes:
I'd like to see an Andorian female on the bridge
A Kzinti (computer generated?) officer (Security?)
A holographic advice program containing the personalities of Starship captains, but not able to issue orders (yet)
An Indian (asian)
A Klingon Engineer? "Graaagh! Hit it till it WORKS!"

That's about all I can remember from the last time I posted this.

Enjoy.

That sounds really cool!

I wish you'd flesh it out a bit more, write an episode around it by chance ...

Well, it's possible that my RPG gamers will be heading in this direction, after a few more missions (and they still have to save the Galaxy when the Federation gets assimilated by the Borg), so I may write a story from that. Of course, my crew isn't the same as a potential crew for the show, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that they're from two different parallel universes, and were thrown together some 80 years into the future of one parallel universe. They started out just after ST:VI, and are now smack dab in the middle of the Dominion War.

Although I DO have a Klingon Engineer, Lt. Khlu'less.

Neelix wouldn't know an agenda if it jumped up and bit him in the ass. That's what I like about him!

Kzinti? Are they related to Tzenkethi? If they are, I'm interested. I know practically nada when it comes to them. I think they have the coolest sounding name since the Tleilaxu!

The Kzinti:

Basically, try to imagine a 9-foot tall, 400-pound intelligent tiger with an attitude problem.

That's a Kzin. Plural Kzinti.

A warrior race created by Larry Niven for his "Known Space" stories and novels, including "Ringworld." ALSO seen in the TAS Episode "The Slaver Weapon," based on a Larry Niven story.

Also my favorite alien species ever.
"PUNY Jem'Hadar!" *MUNCH!*

Larry Niven? Didn't he play James Bond in Casino Royale?

(yes I know I've done this joke already... but I like it!)

Actually, "The Slaver Weapon" wasn't based on a Niven story, it was written by Niven himself.

LOL re: the Klingon's name ...

Ooooh, big cats! I like that idea ... weren't they also in an early TNG novel? A crossover with that TOS Roman episode? My mind is going, forgive me.

Weren't the Kzinti used in one of the earliest ST RPGs as the bad guys?

Yes.

However, in my game, the PC's were instrumental in bringing the Kzinti Empire into the Dominion War on the side of the Federation.

Kzin aren't very subtle, their preferred battle tactic is "scream-and-leap," but they're very hardy, strong, and difficult to kill. Hand-to-hand with Jem'Hadar? Not a problem for the kitties.

::picturing my cats attacking a Jem'Haddar...::

They sound like a cool race, First. I'd like to hear more about them ... of course, that brings up the question of what independent powers joined in the fight for the Dominion *besides* the big three, but ...

I really like the idea. Such a series could be something like the best of TNG and DS9 combined.

Yeah, they are pretty well exactly like the Kilrathi from the Wing Commander series. They're effectively feline Klingons.

We got into a war with them in the Niven timeline. Six wars, actually. We beat the snot out of them every time, thanks to some kind soul selling us FTL tech. Eventually, the only males left were the ones that weren't agressive enough to go out and get killed in the wars, so we got along reasonably well after that.

Oh, and their females are non-sentient.

The "Slaver Weapon" was in fact based on a short story by Larry Niven called "The Soft Weapon".

Here's a interesting idea - The fragmenting Romulan Empire could be seen as a RL mirror to the mess in Yugoslavia and Russia. Plus you could do stories on ethnic cleansing, terrorism, the Federation having to pick the lesser of two evils in the broken up Empire. I like this idea a LOT.

Kzinti were first seen in the ST Anime Series and were later incorporated in Star Fleet Battles (A strategy game created by Amarillo Designs, I think...) Their main enemies were the Klingons and the Lyrans (another cat race).

And don't forget the Caitians from the Animes series too. It's been said that we've seen one of em' in the Council room scenes in Trek 4.

I can just see it in my head of Romulan D'deridex class ships slugging it out with each other. Talk about a brutal fight.

Okay, let's set something straight here. There never was a ST anime series. And if there ever is, I'll go insane. There was a ST animated series, but there were never and Japanese involved in it.

Was the Animated Series ever aired in Japan? Because, if so, it would have to be translated into Japanese, yes? So, that would mean the Japanese WERE involved ... muwahahahahaha!

Actually, it WAS translated into Japanese. The "Concordance" gives the titles of both the filmed & the animated episodes in other countries. I ran an impromptu trivia game one night in an AOL Trek room where I would type in one of the said foreign names & people had to figure them out. Some were truly bizarre, e.g., "Alice In Wonder Space" for "I, Mudd" & "Transformation! Captain Kirk's Crisis" for "Turnabout Intruder" in Japanese & "One Of A Later And Less Distinguished Generation" for "A Piece Of the Action" in German.
