To hear cadets singing on Earhart Station? Whatever, I just wrote it to get the song it's based on out of my head.<P>(Sung to the tune of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot)<P><b>The End of the Starship Valhalla</b><P>The Legend lives on, from the Lysians on down,<BR>Of the space that they call the 'Deep Reaches,'<BR>The Vastness, it's said, never gives up its dead<BR>And the darkness of space never ceases.<BR>Out there in the cold, on neutral zone patrol,<BR>The Starship Valhalla was cruising.<BR>The good ship and true was a bone to be chewed<BR>When the Jem'Hadar fighters came calling<P>The ship was the pride of the Federation side<BR>Cruising out from Utopia Planitia<BR>As light cruisers go, she was tougher than most<BR>With a crew and good captain well seasoned<BR>Concluding a sweep of the Kelinnian Deep<BR>When they left at a slow pace for Vulcan<BR>And later that night when the red alert cried<BR>Could it be a cold wind they'd been feeling?<P>The tactical board made a tell-tale sharp sound<BR>And the whole bridge was caught in the feeling<BR>And every man knew, as the captain did too,<BR>'Twas the damned Jem'hadar come a'stealing.<BR>The raiders came fast, and the first phaser blast<BR>Knocked out the warp core and the subspace<BR>They fired all guns, and an antimatter sun<BR>Marked one Jemmies final resting place.<P>The torpedoes flew, but the good captain knew<BR>The the Jems were too many to conquer.<BR>At 7. P.M. a main bulkhead gave in, he said <BR>"Fellas, it's been good t'know ya."<BR>They tried old radio, to let Starfleet know<BR>That the good ship and crew were in danger<BR>And when later that day the signal faded away<BR>'Twas the end of the Starship Valhalla<P>When the other ships came, all the sign that remained<BR>Was the residue left from the battle.<BR>The searchers all said they'd have made Betazed<BR>If they'd put ten more light-years behind her<BR>They might have surrendered, more likely shot down,<BR>They might have broke up under fire.<BR>And all that remains are the faces and names <BR> Of the wives, hisbands, sons, and the daughters.<P>Mutara roils, Triffid Nebula glows,<BR>In the rooms of her ice crystal mansion.<BR>The Horehead steams like a young sailor's dreams<BR>The Ka'tar Belt's taken many helmsmen.<BR>And farther on out The Badlands put out<BR>Energy enough to fry a planet<BR>And the starships still go, as the captains all know<BR>With the Jem'Hadar raiders remembered.<P>In a gleaming white hall in Old Frisco they prayed<BR>In the Starfleet Officer's cathedral.<BR>The mourning bell chimed till it rand fifty-nine times<BR>For each man on the Starship Valhalla.<BR>The legend lives on, from the Lysians on down<BR>Of the space that they call the "Deep Reaches."<BR>The Vastness, they said, never gives up its dead<BR>And the darkness of space never ceases...<P>------------------<BR>The government that seems the most unwise, oft goodness to the people best supplies.
