Nice work also....

Oh hi Resistance! You have found the Flare forums?

What about the rest of the ship? There's only the saucer. I would like the entire ship.

What about all the torp launchers in the upper pod?
Why can't we have a horizontal warp core? Is there anything wrong with that in Starships?

Posted by Ritten (Member # 417) on :
A, mmmm, thumbnail would work also.....
Nice, and big.....
Why aren't there horizontal warp cores?
Posted by Resistance (Member # 893) on :
lol. If I make it too small its a problem, if I make it too big its a problem.. :/ ...
Well the runabouts have horizontal warp cores. If you have a Horizontal core on a starship it would have to be near the top or bottom. So the core can be ejected. Also I'm sure that the Enterprise NX-01 has a Horizontal core...

Resistance,
Nice work and welcome to the Flare boards!

Nice work. Very nice. But "Nacell" has an "e" at the end of it
What program are you using?
Posted by iam2xtreme (Member # 836) on :
That looks great but isnt the Akira class supposed to have 19 decks?
Posted by Resistance (Member # 893) on :
Where did you hear that it had 19 decks?
Posted by iam2xtreme (Member # 836) on :
EAS i think. Not entirely sure. I'll try and find it when i have more time.
Posted by Dax (Member # 191) on :
There is no canon or official deck count for the Akira-class. My own structural analysis gives the ship 17 decks excluding the pod.
Posted by Nimpim (Member # 205) on :
Which could have two decks! Tadaa!!!
Posted by iam2xtreme (Member # 836) on :
there ya go. Straight from EAS on the Size of the akira class article. Click and see.

Except that analysis was done using the early inaccurate schematic.

If those are anti-matter holders on top of the reaction chamber, aren't they kinda close to the bridge?
Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :
Hmmm... That's a good point. Though, if the containment fails, the whole ship goes boom.... so it probably doesn't matter much where they are.
You might want to actually show the bridge behind the catamaran, though, since it's a fairly important location.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Again, is there anything to say that the Akira can't have a horizontal warp core!?!

You know what be kind of cool..? A horizontal core in the aft pod with the transfer conduits running directly to the struts. Is the pod anywhere close to being big enough for that while still leaving room for the 50 pho-torp launchers it's supposed to have?
The core could eject aftwards if needed without anything being in the way.
Posted by Dax (Member # 191) on :
I'm not real sure where a good place for the core would be. The weapons pod would definitely be too crammed full of weapons IMO. Resistance's location is good, other than the distance to the engines being excessive. Having a horizontal core is all well and good, but where would you put this fabled core and how would it be better than the current placement?
I remember a fan(boy) suggesting that the Akira has two cores -- one under each of the "turbo-charger" things. It's not a completely bad idea. It equates to two small cores in a reasonably good placement. OTOH there'd be a complete lack of redundancy -- if only one of the cores went offline then the ship still couldn't go to warp, but then again, at least the ship would still have warp power for other (non engine) use.
I don't know. Again, I'm not sure there is any good location for the core(s).

Posted by Fructose (Member # 309) on :
You could always have an emergency interconnect between the two cores so the ship might have reduced warp capacity.
Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
The problem with dual warp cores is that I can't think of any situation in which a ship needed just another core's worth of power.
Posted by Timo (Member # 245) on :
Then again, each of the two cores could be individually weaker. This might not be cost-effective if the duplication of hardware outweighed the lesser demands placed per core - but it COULD be the only practial choice, dictated by the ship's internal structure.
Just think of the weird machinery arrangements of amphibious attack ships in the real world.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :
True, but we've seen other suggestions for places a warp core could go on an Akira and not need to be split into two individually inferior models.

That *may* be the core hatch, but it seems like, if it were, the navigational deflector machinery would run right though the core. Or the core would have to go through the nav. def. in the event of ejection. The deflector runs aft for a little ways behind it's exterior plate.
Edit: But now that I go back and look at your placement in the MSD, you have placed *directly* behind a somewhat shortened deflector (compared to other ships' deflectors, that is). I dig it. I am now officially out of nitpicks. Except that "Nacell" still has an "e" at the end
Posted by Dax (Member # 191) on :
It does seem likely that that's the core hatch, assuming it's not just some meaningless detail on the hull anyway. At any rate, I can't think of a better place to put a solitary core.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
Couldn't that be the tractor beam emitter?
Posted by Dax (Member # 191) on :
I considered that but I'm pretty sure the tractor emitter is further fwd, just below the deflector dish. You can clearly see it in this production sketch but it's also there in the final product.
BTW, that sketch shows the 3 remaining torpedo tubes (the only tubes out of the 15 that aren't in the pod) just above the deflector dish. Before anyone says "they're windows, not torp tubes", photorps were shown to be fired from that location in First Contact. And again, that hull detail also exists on the final product.

What about a dorsal ejection hatch? Any marking on the dorsal surface that would work?
Guess why I want to know...
Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :
I still think that the Akira sports twin launchers port and starboard. Sue me.
