After seeing the Conestoga patch in the new Star Charts book I was inspired to make this conjectural mission patch for the S.S. Valiant, enjoy!

that looks rad as hell. great work, as usual.

Killer. For those of us who haven't seen it *raises hand*, could you post the Conestoga's patch as well... ?
pretty please.

If my scanner was working then I...wouldn't. Sorry, I perfer not to bend the spine of my new and rather flimsy book. Perhaps someone else will be more charitable? (and have a working scanner)
In the mean time here's another logo, this time it's the UESPA command seal.

huhuh.. he said 'rim' Beavis.

Now THAT, I like! Very nice.
Only thing I see (I nitpick because I love): The red Swoosh thing looks a little... distorted. Like it's not quite a perfect oval. It looks like it has some flat spots in it. Specifically, the lower half seems off. Now, if that's the way you intended it, ignore me. But if you were looking to get a perfect oval, play with your paths just a smidge.

He ehe he...hey Butthead, he also said 'Probe'.

Yeah, I know it's not perfect but curves like that are hard enough to get right without also having to make sure the shadow object behind it lines up with the same curve.
Hopefully this will break up the error a little.

What program are you using?

Paint Shop Pro 7. Why?

NICE! But a few things...
"Beyond the Rim" - apart from sounding like a gay porn flick... the Valiant wasn't specifically headed for the Edge of the Galaxy - they were just swept there.
The delta symbol - it would be FANTASTIC if you could use the TOS 'starfleet' symbol. The little yellow arrowhead seen on the side of the ship - ALSO often seen on Starbases. There is an image somewhere on flare-upload (I don't know how I'd find it) I used to have it on my computer but I think it's gone now - from "Court Martial". The Girl, Spock, McCoy and the Asian Ensign Girl sitting in the 'court room' and behind them is a rather large Starfleet symbol from TOS - like what was seen on the side of the ship.
Andrew
And where is Antarctica and New Zealand on that map of the Earth!?! (Well NZ could be there).

I was just curious. If you were using Photoshop, I could tell you how to fix the curves with little fuss... but I know nothing about Paintshop Pro.
It really looks cool.

Was the Valiant launched from San Francisco?
Again, very nice.
What about one for... the Charybdis? or the Mariposa?

Possible, but I haven't seen that episode in ages so I don't recall exactly. It was really just ment as a sort of a tribute to B5.

Wrong period I'm afraid. What you see here is the same UESPA symbol that was seen on the "Friendship One" probe, the starfleet boomerang wouldn't appear for another century or two. I did infact use it in my TOS-era Transport command logo seen here.

That's just me being lazy, I ripped that earth off of my Apollo-Class Project logo that I did some time ago. Which, by the way, was itself stolen from Nasa's Apollo program patch, So blame Nasa, not me

Possibly, it certainly looks that way on the patch. On the other hand it could just as easily been launched from Marin county

The Charybdis patch was actually seen on-screen, the lazy bastards just reused the Apollo 17 patch. I re-drew it and altered the details somewhat to make Apollo look more feminie (like Charybdis herself) and subtly changed the lettering and a few of the planets.
As for the Mariposa, I'm open to suggestions as to the format/layout/content.

Very nice NASA-style patches, Rev. Mine are usually more USN-ish.
A few nits! I like the Charybdis patch, but maybe the individual elements should be a bit larger. There's a lot of blue background to cover.
On the UESPA patch, the letters on the bottom are running together too much. I think the gold ring shades too much towards white, which makes the stars get lost. Part of the wreath is getting covered by the black edge of the shield, so you might have to shrink the globe and wreath some more.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Cheers Masao. The Charybdis is a tricky one because as I mentioned before, they used the Apollo 17 patch onscreen so I'm walking the line between violating cannon and accepting a result of the art department's small budget.
For those not familiar with the original patch, here is a comparison.
As you can see I've already made several alterations, most obvious (and necessary) being the crew and mission names. However I suppose I could increase the size of the planets somewhat, without impacting on the design too much.
I think that's everything. Better?

Revisions done to the Charybdis patch.
Posted by Masao (Member # 232) on :
Sorry, my earlier comments were about the Valiant patch, not Charybdis! The elements in the Valiant patch should be a bit bigger. Sorry, sorry.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Never mind, I needed to revise the Charybdis patch anyway.
*grumble* Bloody yank. *grumble*
Anyway, here's the new version of the Valiant patch.
I wasn't at all happy with the old fire trail so I stole this one from somewhere.
Posted by Masao (Member # 232) on :
Yankee-ness has nothing to do with it! I'd be annoying regardless of nationality.
That Valiant patch is better with the bigger elements. Hmm, that fire trail looks VERY familiar. (Of course, I swiped it from somewhere else first.) However, it does look a bit cramped at the turn, since it 's very close to the border but turning very hard to avoid going out . You might consider letting it go past the border at the bottom since the ship is already past the border at the top. Either that or move the turn further inside the border.
Posted by Reverend (Member # 335) on :
Well it certainly helps
Well technically I have more right to steal it than you do, after all the Valiant is much more contemporary to the Phoenix than the Daudalus. (spot the relevance of that if you dare)
Oddly enough the cramped turn was intentional, it supposed the show that the Valiant took a northerly route out of the solar system, to the near edge of the galactic barrier. I know a better way of doing that would be to have the earth shown top down and have the Valiant seen front end-on but . . . I'm just too lazy.
Posted by Masao (Member # 232) on :
Did you swipe directly from the original or did you swipe indirectly via my swipe? LOL!
I still thinks the trail looks a bit funny with that sharp turn. Maybe if you wrapped it around the Earth once?

Awesome work on the patch. I can not wait to see what you come up with next.
