This is topic scratchbuild challenge for cojoker (and whoever thinks they could do it). in forum Designs, Artwork, & Creativity at Flare Sci-Fi Forums.
Heh Heh. so cojoker your the scratch build master eh? Well my friend, my challenge to you is to build, in your beloved scale of 1/2500, the aegean class starship. and when its finished you gotta show all the flarites. if anyone else wants to give it a go then feel free. i would try but i have no experience at scratchbuilding. the balls in your court!!!

Sure, Why not! i have a 2500th Springfield going just now (eric made such a cool 1400th version)....but since you challenged me....
Ever since I saw those great illustrations here at Flare, I've been slowly gathering reference material for a scratchbuild.
The ship seems pretty long, but not real mass heavy...I place it at almost 400 meters (if we assume a simular size bridge to the Interpid class). It'll be a nice side project from my three current models: the Springfield, Azyaki (TNG version) and the ongoing nightmare of the 2500th Dominion Battleship!
Oh, and I go by Jason Abbadon over here! What's your handle at SSM?
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Anybody got a schematic of this ship for me to use, or must I go it alone?
Posted by Ravenstar Studios (Member # 917) on :
Jason would do a good job on it and I always enjoy seeing his new stuff.
So what does the Aegean Class look like ? any pics or a web site showing the ship?
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
I'll be using this as partial reference, but I'll probably make the deflector a bit smaller though.

i used togo by iam2xtreme but cos my computer had "internal issues" i no longer have any of my previous screennames. i intend to reregister soon though, and i still check it out when i can. also i think cojoker is a cool name, dont know why , so thats why i called you it.
Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :
That's nice. Would you mind working on spelling, punctuation, and grammar while you're at it? It'd be might appreciated, mate.

Me's a modelr! Spelin' is fer folks with skoolin'.
Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :
Sadly, I've not gotten much done on that drawing recently... there was someone who posted a great top and side view of the ship...but I don't remember who, nor do I have the file here... I know it'll be in the archives though. I believe the discussion was about the ships of Armada 2... Probably Starships and Tech or General Trek

Many thanks to Aban Rune and Captain asamov for those schematics! My work is practally half completed now, just be having the research!
Posted by aneurysm (Member # 906) on :
heh it was me that started that topic, oh yeah!!! capt kyles work is mighty impressive. hey jason, cojoker, whatever(!) i forgot to ask do you make your ships to order? and how much do you charge? to the uk? also what is the registry for your USS Enyart?

the "fuck?"
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
The Enyart's registry is NCC-48766 (either among the last of the excelsior refits commisioned or possibly an upgraded-like Lakota- refit recommisioned for the Dominion war).
I don't do any commision work, but I am talking with a couple of people about their producing kits of my ships....I think Sabre and Steamrunner would do well, as no one has produced them yet. I'll let you know hot things progress!
-Jason
P.S. I already got schematics scaled to size and materials on hand for the Ageian class and hope to begin work on it on Monday.
Posted by aneurysm (Member # 906) on :
Damn it. the cost of importing kits is too expensive and the end result wouldn't be as good. nevermind.
Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :
I know - I wish the kits used to be 10 bucks a pop here so I could buy a heap of them. But They ended up being something like $30->$50->$100 for them (The Ertl and Monogram Kits).
Andrew
Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :
I wasa usually able to spring for the ERTL kits one at a time... they were about $30. But, there's no way I could afford to buy 5 or 6 of each one so as to have spare parts for kitbashing... though, that would be very cool.
Posted by Austin Powers (Member # 250) on :
One question for all the experienced modelers out there: Wouldn't it be possible to make molds from the parts of, say, the ERTL Ent-D and just make your own casts from that mold?
If so, how do you do it? I'd love to know - and try!
Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :
The "how do you do it" part is where it gets tricky. It would no doubt be possible to make molds from the kits and then modify said molds. However, IIRC, the materials are somewhat pricey. We did stuff like that in college, but getting all the materials might cost a pretty penny for the casual enthusiast.
Posted by Austin Powers (Member # 250) on :
Well, so much for my theory.
Really bad luck. I thought it would be easier and cheaper.
Posted by EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :
there is a nice tutorial on casting parts at www.thomasmodels.com, or at least there was 3 site revisions a go.
[edit: i found the tutorial. ]

The scratchbuild Challenge has now been met! I finished the Ageian class USS Weber (in honor of Mr. Rune's great illustration). The pics of the Weber will be posted on my picturetrail.com account tonight after 7pm eastern satandard time. Search for albums by cojoker Aside from adding twin forward torpedo launchers and some needed additional lifeboats, I kept very faithful to the illustration. This challenge was fun, but I now need to devote my modeling time to the Dominion battleship: so no new "challenges" for a while, Mr. Extreme! Of course, your comments are welcome. (about the model, not my poor typing skills!)
Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :
How in the world did you get a model built so fast?
Can you please post a link to the pics?
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
The model only took me a couple of days. The long wait was mainly due to work interference and having to re-create the saucer after the first one (resin epoxy needs to be exact) failed to cure properly. I hoped to have pics up yesterday, but photography took longer than expected, and I'll have to scan the pics tonight. Your opinion is of particular intrest, Aban! I named the ship Weber after your ill. after all!
Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :
It just blows me away that you were able to create an entire model that quickly. I can't wait to see the pics.
The ship in my illustration was named after a pal of mine, Olivia Weber. So the homage is actually going to her
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Oh... sweeet.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Thanks! Anything you'd improve upon? While researching screenshots for this project, I've become intrested in possibly scratchbuilding a couple of the new Klingon ships....or mabye the Romulan ship that looks like the Valdore class warbird....

Wow, amazing little ship! It looks as if it jumped out of the game. I have a question though; when you made the shuttlebay for the USS Saratoga, you did use the Ertl 1/2500 Enterprise-D right?
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Yeah, all my ships are 2500th. My apartment is too small for a fleet of larger ships! The challenge with building Saratoga was to make something a bit original modelwise....and I'd chopped off the bay doors to customize the Calisto!

I noticed that we have yet to hear from aneurysm... Where for art thou, oh challenger of modelmaking?
Posted by aneurysm (Member # 906) on :
Never fear, Aneurysm is here. Wow that is better than i expected and a lot quicker than i expected too. Excellent.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Thank you....thank you very much. (best Elvis voice)

Aneurysm just threw down this challenge over at the SSM boards, and Paulthr is going to scratchbuild a 1/1400th Iwo Jima class....I hate the design, but really love paul's work. Should be intresting!
Much thanks (overdue) to Cpt. Kyle Amasov for his excellent schematic of the Agean class: no way would my ship have turned out as well as it did without my scaled down "actual size" schematic to work from.
