Hello. This is my first post to the board. Nice place you have here.
I have recently built the command con from TOS Enterprise from the line drawings in the tech manual as published by Ballantine. The woodwork and upholstery has turned out very well, but the electronics have not been installed or even selected yet. It has been difficult to locate period switches and buttons from that era.
I can make do on the electronics one way or another, but what really has me puzzled is what the heck color is this chair?
Every photo or show that I've seen has a different looking color depending upon the lighting used for the scene. I'm thinking that it might be just a shade darker than white on the gray side. Sort of like some newsprint paper in use, but without the yellow tint.
Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what color they think this might actually be?
White has always been an option, but I really don't want it to jump out at you when you look at it like a stark white would.
I'm going to be shooting PPG epoxy automotive paint.

I've seen several good build-ups of that chair (floating around online) and the body of the chair is always a medium gray with mabye a bit of Duck Egg blue added in when mixing.
I'll see what I vcan dig up once I get back home.

Thank you for the suggestion Jason. I'll wait and see what you come up with.
I'm on my fourth coat of sanding sealer and there will probably be two more after that so I'm in no hurry.

I don't have FS numbers handy, but in Pantone I think that 441M would be a good general color that would effectively shift with the lighting.

Ug...I'm having a *fun* time looking for where I packed that CD. Might be a day or two.

Thanks Wiz. If you know what the FSN for that color is I'd be obliged.
No hurry Jason. I still have many things to do that will keep me occupied before painting.
Edited to add: I did some research on that Pantone 441M color. I think the hexidecimal number is ff0000. When I searched for that color number, several website hits indicated that they used that as a background color.
It appeared to be a very pale blue-gray similar to, but lighter than this posting text box.

One of our MSFM members, Dave, made a 1:1 scale Captain's Chair a long time ago. It was really good to look at but I think the gray color should've had more blue in it.

That looks very good. I had seriously considered a plastic laminate to cover mine, but instead I'm filling and doing a lot of sanding.
I did not build the lower deck for mine as it would sit a bit too high for where it will be.
I got the catalog from Mouser Electronics today so now the selection for the electronics begins.

BTW, #ff0000 is just plain bright red!

I guess I wasn't reading the code correctly. It's been quite awhile since I coded HTML for my web site.
The lighter blue-gray message boxes look really close to what I'm after. Might still have a bit too much blue though.

I selected the buttons and indicator lamps for the port and starboard armrest panels. They are about as close as I can come to the originals without having them custom manufactured at considerable expense. Now, if I wanted a quantity of about 500 or so, they said they would be quite cheap individually and I could get more any time I needed them.
I've had to heavily modify individual rocker switches for the port-side panel as I couldn't find any sets that were ganged together in a group. What a pain in the ass this mod has turned out to be. You'd think there was at least one manufacturer on this planet that would make a set of ganged rocker switches for use on a control panel.
I'm going with 115VAC neon indicators. I had originally planned on wiring it at 12VDC, but certain indicator lamps were not available in the approximate sizes that were required. In addition, I won't have to use a resistor network to drop all of the voltages that LED indicators and smaller incandescent bulbs would require.
The chair framework itself is finally ready for paint and is covered with plastic sheeting waiting for the primer coat. Might be a few days yet.

The Con is almost finished. I'm waiting on the starboard side armrest to set up with glue. The portside armrest has turned out well, with an oak inlay surrounded by black stained wood. The oak inlay has a poly-uerethane gloss finish, while the outboard borders are in a satin black.
The paint turned out better than expected. It is an off-white on the blue-grey side, but is difficult to tell unless you hold a contrasting color next to it. Just standing next to it you'd swear it was white...but not quite.
Buttons and indicators are all working and panels are fixed in place. What bums me is that almost all of the indicators show up as orange under little or no light. Damn neon. I should have went with the incandescent indicators on the starboard panel.
I can change it later, but I had hoped to get it right the first time. Now I can play Geordi LaForge and do an engineering mod when the mood strikes me.

When I get them taken I will...but I thought you needed 250 posts to upload an image.
Would you clarify that for me please?

well, you can ftp it to your own site and link the image which is what I do since the upload doesn't work for me. Or you could email it and have someone else do it.

Here are some pictures of the chair that are posted to another forum I help moderate.
This will have to do since I don't have the requisite amount of posts for the privilage to do so here.
