I've made a short summary of fonts and colors used on displays.

Bearing in mind that I'm slightly colorblind, there might be a few errors (I'm not sure at all I got the ENT colors right).

Any glaring omissions and/or errors? I might also do summaries of TNG up to Nemesis.

Fuckin' NICE! I was gonna ask what the names of the REAL fonts used in trek were, not the amature "FederationBold" types.

Any chance of you making a zip of the fonts for our use? Im sick of squishing Eurostile.

Also, what about Ship Hull fonts? Do they just use an outlined version of Microgramma?

Some of the colours look a bit off to me, the saturation level on the movie-era dark blue and light green are way too high for a start and I don't ever recall seeing any blue at all on a TOS display.
But then I'm a little colour blind too.

It's kinda funny to see the TOS text, in Courier New, that was obviously done with a manual type writer.

I'de like those Movie and TNG fonts too. Yuu usually only see the Ship Name fonts.

There was definitely some blue on Uhura's console. The yellow varies between near-white and smudgy orange.

You may be right about the Movie colors.

I was just about to link to that.

The article does not mention the Enterprise-C, which had Starfleet BldExt with a black outline instead of a red one. There is a fan-font called Starfleet BldExt, and there's no reason not to use it. Although it doesn't have the modified 'D'.

And I believe your Fleet Old School is supposed to represent Machine Extended, Mike?

Posted by Ace (Member # 389) on :

Well, we know they meant to put red outlining on the E-C, but ran out of time (if I recall Sternbach correctly).

Still, the folks at Utopia (is that where she was built?) could have run out of red paint, so who knows?

post fonts plz.

Posted by SoundEffect (Member # 926) on :

Thanks for linking me in there Capt. Mike. I was about to link myself in there too.

I didn't include the Enterprise-C stuff because I thought that I've seen photos where a definite red can be seen in the outline of the font, unless I'm seeing an artifact of jpeg-ing.

Can anyone provide a pic of Enterprise-C that is either definitely red outline or undisputably black?

Black was only used on the AMT model decal sheet as an error...I'm not convinced of the filming model.

Fleet Old School (which I might get around to finishing one day) is supposed to duplicate the Machine Ext, but it was reverse engineered from a variant of the Amarillo font.. i took the Amarillo and 'fixed' all the letters that differed from the TOS series decals.. i still have working files, i plan to add in "The Cage" characters that were part of the Amarillo base as a subset of the Fleet OS font, making it useful if you ever wanted to switch the era of your 1701 or whatever

In this picture, I can only see a white outline around the E-C's registry.

I have a Star Trek card of some sort (can't find it at the moment though) that shows a computer display on TOS. The text on the screen looks like a modified Machine Extended

You could do worse than visit here...

http://simplythebest.net/fonts/TVshow_fonts.html

It has a vast array of fonts for all occasions, but since the names are 'made up" you have to go through it page by page to find the gold nuggets. I find it handy as I have to make more than just Trek models.

A few odd fonts from TWOK:

- Retinal Scan #1 - Closest font I could find is called Clarendon Bold Extended

- Retinal Scan #2 - Unknown. Although on second thought, the basic Arial Rounded is a pretty good match.

- Kobayashi data - Unknown. I searched for this one before. It's strangely familiar, but nothing I found looks like it.

There are a lot more weird "computer-style" fonts in the early movies. It definitely got more universal after Okuda moved in...

Yes, the white outline is there as well, but I'm maintaining that the outline beyond that is red. If it were black it would show up as dark as the main number. The fact that the outline beyond white is so hard to see is because red is not as strong a color (and most Ambassador Class photos are poor quality). If you look at the "USS Enterprise" on the hull in that pic, there's a red tint overall to the outline of those letters.

This one isn't exactly a font as we know it. It was used in early CAD and CG programs, and it's basically just lines and curves (if there are any true curves in it) being used to literally draw the letters. It looks to me like the animation is being drawn on a vector display.

I believe I have some fonts from ACAD that look like that.

The "Pro" version of Amarillo has all the proper letters. The shareware version circulating as freeware doesn't. http://www.tlai.com/med_des/ausafpro.html
I paid and downloaded Pro. Works very nicely!

Well, Im going to be getting all these fonts together and making a giant pack with an installer.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

Just as long as the fonts can be installed without the installer. [Wink]

Posted by Wes1701J (Member # 212) on :

Yeah, not an installer. Just a zip. Dunno what i was on when i said that.

I'll probably get off my ass and do this on saturday.

Here ya go guys.

http://flareupload.pleh.net/uploads/212/WesTrekFonts.zip

Ive included all the fonts discussed at the two links given here (Hull Markings and Signage/Displays).

Ive also included a few logo/marketing fonts used in Star Trek promotional materials and titles.

Enjoy it! Let me know if there are any problems!

Posted by Captain Mike XLVII (Member # 709) on :

there's only 7 fonts in there.

Posted by Wes (Member # 212) on :

Uh.... what? There should be around 22. 7 of them are from the Marketing and Logotype folder, and 15 of them from the Ships and Displays folder.

Must be soemthing wrong with your software Mike, I can see them all just fine.

Posted by aneurysm (Member # 906) on :

theres only seven for me too.

Posted by SoundEffect (Member # 926) on :

Weird. I downloaded the same .zip file as youse guys and I got two folders with all the listed fonts...

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

I only get the 7 fonts.

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Go to Trek5.com and you can pick up the 'Jefferies' font - the font that they use for the title of 'Enterprise' and on their NX-01 caps.

Update your backward-ass versions of WinZIP, y'all. There. Are. TWENTY-THREE! Lights. Erh, fonts. So.

Posted by Guardian 2000 (Member # 743) on :

When I browsed the zip using Windows XP, it only showed the Marketing folder and the .doc, meaning I only got the seven fonts also.

However, when I unzipped the file to my desktop using WinRAR, I could then browse the new folder and see the additional directory and fonts.

Strange.

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

I am also viewing the ZIP through XP.

Posted by Guardian 2000 (Member # 743) on :

So XP sucks in yet another way, evidently. Get WinZip or WinRAR.

Posted by Spike (Member # 322) on :

Well, I can see all fonts with XP.

Almost anything nubdled with Windows is going to be inferior to an add on product. It's going to be a stripped down, core product with minimal features to cut down on complexity and support costs. WordPad, Paint, Solitaire, Internet Explorer, they all suck comapred to real products available elsewhere. So try WinZip or something else. [Smile]

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Worked for me with XP too.

Posted by Wes (Member # 212) on :

WinXP's built in Zip support should work just fine. I used WinRar 3.3 to compress them, however. [Smile]
