Hah! It's confirmed. There's a hot new girl coming on board the TARDIS next year. The interesting bit is that she's already met her fate as a different (and apparently unrelated) character in the most recent episode of the series. This won't be the first time that the same person has been cast in a different role so soon after a previous appearance (it's happened twice before, though with Gallifreyan characters) Read on, and say hello to Martha Jones!

I liked Billie Piper as Rose, but honestly I haven't been enjoying her as much this season. As I've previously wrtten, she and the new Doctor are too close in their relationship, as well as in their personalities; she contrasted much better with the brooding anti-hero played by Chris Eccleston. Whoever Martha Jones is, I'm sure they'll write her to make a more effective pairing to David Tennant's manic enthusiasm.

I couldn't agree more - I think the best part of the Rose/9th Doctor partnership was the fact that he was suffering over what he had to do in the war, and that through Rose he started to rediscover the magic of travelling through time and space, seeing the universe...not to mention that I think she helped him get over the guilt he felt for surviving when all the rest of his people didn't. Rose, on the other hand, discovered that her life wasn't all chips/telly/sleep/work and that there were wonderful things to be experienced out there. She needed him as a guide, sure, but I think he needed her to remind him what he had been fighting for in the war, and why he had in the end done what he did to win it.

I think their bond worked so well because both characters had that need to link them - they were both discovering things about themselves through their interactions with each other. The 10th Doctor, however, seems to have a more enthusiastic outlook than his previous incarnation and so the relationship is out of whack - Rose isn't helping him anymore. For most of season 2 I've actually found myself wanting something nasty to happen to them because I think (and maybe this has been what RTD has been aiming at all along) they've started to get complacent and have edged into feeling untouchable to a certain extent.

I certainly hope they make the next companion a better match - maybe someone just a little darker, more downbeat, to play against the manic energy the Doctor seems to have. I wonder what time period she will be from?
