Did anyone else catch the premiere of "Eureka" last night? It looked interesting, but I'm having trouble categorizing it. From the promos, it looked like it would be a lighthearted show, but in actuality there was definitely a dark streak in there. A pure lighthearted show would not have barbecued dogs, a leg-eating vortex, or murder in it. I'm not sure how far this will go, but it might be interesting. It just wasn't even close to being good enough for me to be saying "OMFG!!111!!!"
Other points: -Looks like another New Hollywood (aka Vancouver) production due to the use of several people we've seen in Stargate. -Since when does Max Headroom sound like an Aussie? -Henry apparently created another MiB car. I wonder if it has a red button? -I don't get the dog. The Great White Headroom can't catch it, but it comes right up to everyone else. -I'd like to see Jo's entire arsenal. The weapon she did show looked like another refugee from the MiB set.

I caught it. Spent a lot of time picking out those little tidbits like Max Headroom, Nerus, Col. Chechov (I think), and the Alley McBeal dude. Then the bad dudette chick pulls the triple barreled MIB gun out. Sweet. I was fairly disappointed in the BSG sneak preview though.
I thought it was pretty good but it could go either direction, really really good or Star Trek V. I get the feeling it may become a sci-fi version of Love Boat where we get to see cast offs from other sci-fi shows making story-of-the-week cameos though.

I thought it was okay, I am hoping it improves, but who knows. I am disappointed the sheriff's eyes didn't glow, but hey, wrong series.
The dog looks like it may play an important role, while the bed & breakfast women is either a 'physcotherapist' or an expensive call girl, maybe both.
Now, the ECW shit on afterwards, sad, sad, sad. I caught the second showing of Eureka, so ended up watching the last minute or two of it, felt like a week though.

I've seen the pilot now. Not bad, but I'm wondering how far they can go with it. I'll pick up the second episode to see.
-The show is shot in Vancouver, so it makes use of the not-so-innumerable locations that we've already seen on SG-1, Smallville, Supernatural, Blade, and other currently-producing genre shows requiring "small town" settings. This goes all the way back through Highlander, X-Files, etc.
-Same goes for the actors, which are often seen in Vancouver shows though they are not necessarily based there... Maury Chaykin was seen in SG-1 last year, but is not a local. Nor is Rob LaBelle ("First Wave"), for that matter. Garry Chalk IS a local, and is known most recently as the potentially-late Colonel Chekov from SG-1. Allison Blake (the DoD rep) was Teal'c's wife Dray'auc in a couple appearances.
-Various props are local too. Lupo's triple gun is NOT an MIB cast-off, but was first seen on Andromeda and then SG-1 and Atlantis. This time it was just painted silver to represent the MIB vibe.

I caught it online today. My wife and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm curious as to how long the premise can last, though. A fish-out-of-water story can only go for so long since, after a while, the main character is no longer a fish-out-of-water. Although I liked most of the characters, I wasn't too fond of the main character's daughter. I think we've seen enough of the smart aleck rebellious daughter on various other shows.

Month-later checkup! Anyone still watching it? I am, but not with the zest with which I pursue the two Stargate shows.
To me, "Eureka" is just like every episode of the X-Files that happens in Smalltown U.S.A., which is probably most of that show. The characters have yet to really grow on me, though they've mostly lost the fish-out-of-water vibe from the first episode, which I like. The large cast and trying to balance their screen time has been a stickler - I think the fat cafe guy has had more character development and dialogue than Max Headroom at this point. Still, I'll probably keep watching until the halfway point anyway before rendering judgement.

My wife and I actually like it quite a bit. It doesn't hurt that she also really likes "Dead Like Me" which comes on before it.
Yeah, it still has a little of that Northern Exposure vibe going but that ain't all bad. I don't know how they are going to do the "Bad Dude-ette" thing and not get crappy but I'll wait and see. The other thing I don't want to see is EVERY episode being an "Area 5" tie-in. Whatever is in there CAN'T be the cause of EVERYTHING that happens...I hope.

I've been watching and enjoying it. Incidentally, Mark, I don't watch either of the Stargate shows. I don't care how good it is, they lost me back at the beginning of the first season of SG-1 when they got rid of Sha'uri, and effectively undid the happy ending of he movie. I am looking forward to a new season of BSG, though.

I'm in Peregrinus' camp on this. Likewise, I don't watch either Stargates (Never have. Didn't like the movie. Never made the time for it. Dad, on the other hand, watches it regularly), so I don't catch any of the Gate references.
My wife and I also watch the show every Tuesday. In fact, she got upset with me when I started to erase the pilot (she fell asleep). She's not a scifi buff by any means (total opposite in this area), so I was suprised at her reaction.
In fact, the entire family (wife and stepson) watch Smallville, Battlestar, & Dr. Who.
But I digress...
It's an interesting show. Interesting enough that I tune in week after week. The Section 5 week after week is going to get old fast and I do wonder if the writers can't think of anything else or what. It's like they're forcing it down our throats.
Fluff show. On par with Invisible Man (which I liked) Probably means it will get cancelled just like all the other shows.

I'm far from implying that Stargate is the be-all and end-all of SF on television these days. I guess it's my own rabid fandom of the series showing through more than anything.

My wife and I still watch Eureka faithfully. In fact it's currently the only show we regularly watch. From other's post, the show seems to be turning out as 'husband and wife sci-fi'.
I think the biggest difference between Eureka and small-town episodes of X-Files is that the citizens of Eureka are meant to be likeable. On X-Files, the citizens, which we never really get to know, are inevitably hiding something sinister. (Sure we seem like good folk, but turn your back on us and we'll behead and eat you). In Eureka they're just odd.
