The Lucian Alliance haven't yet really proven themselves as real villains, but they're fun to poke around with every once in a while. They're the largest power to emerge after the fall of the Goa'uld (except for the Jaffa Nation). Now that the Jaffa themselves are in disarray following the loss of Dakara, it makes sense to see what this pirate nation is up to.

-The Oddysey really gets trashed quickly this time. The CG model is quite nicely trashed as well, with bent antennae, gaping holes, etc. Was anyone thinking "Galaxy Quest" during the minefield part?

-Cute addition to the opening sequence - for many years now it's been a shot of the four main cast (whoever they are at the time) walking through the Earth gate in the final shot. Now, they march up the ramp, and Vala comes running in late to join them!

-I think Colonel Lionel Prendergast of the Prometheus was the longest-serving ship commander in the SGC, although others have been seen more often. Like Paul Emmerson here, who has been in numerous episodes since he was introduced last year. Paul is unceremoniously disposed of this week, conclusively shot to death in a hail of unconvincing firearm SFX. We never even got to know ye...

-"Oh, I didn't fix anything, I just disabled that annoying alarm." - Vala

-I'm surprised that NO ONE could spare SG-1 a ship. They're pretty low on allies these days, but surely SOMEONE had a ship to lend 'em. A friendly faction of Jaffa, for example? Or were they also busy fending for their lives?

-When the portly junk dealer says "show me the naquadah", he rubs his thumb and finger together as we do to signify cash. No one in the Galaxy has EVER used paper currency aside from Earth, as far as I know.

-The Lucian Alliance counts among its main activities the continued production of kasa - probably the addictive variety in addition to the regular exports. Also, pretty much everyone's wearing the grey uniforms these days, though as with Anateo it seems that it means less to some than others.

-The ruthless Kefflin is played by none other than voice actor extraordinaire and frequent anime convention guest, Scott McNeil! Scott has been in SG-1 before, as one of the posessed town yokels in season six's "Nightwalkers". He didn't mention this minor role when I met him in August in Vancouver, but it was only two minor scenes. Hopefully we'll see more of him though, as Natan's star seems to be waning these days - I've known Scott for years and he can act rather well in this sort of character.

-Among the table of Natan's seconds is "Ramirez".

-Natan has previously been seen as Paul Porter, the hapless engineer which was the first of the Borg's victims in "Star Trek: First Contact".

-Once Anateo is vacu-formed by the Asgard beam, he vainly tries firing his gun at the bridge. Oddly, this doesn't at all cause him to slow down or spin relative to the ship. Regardless, eww.

-Over the last few episodes the SGC has been upgrading their mobile laptops to Dell XPSs, which are ruggedized units - but optimized for gaming, no?

-Teal'c is pretty pissed off from having to be tortured so frequently. Twice this year by Natan, no less.

-I'm really confused as to how the Reole masking agent works. I thought originally that it was tuned to a specific person, but now seems that it's dependent on suggestion from the victim AND the guy wearing the ring.

-"For the record, I'm always prepared. I just have to press this button here." - Major Marks

-Continuing the trend of unexplained Earthisms, the alien guy says "I screwed up" before he got blown up.

-At the end, we get an almost-throwaway line that the Lucian Alliance is basically at war with Earth. They're nowhere near organized enough to actually try to take the planet (only the Ori are that powerful, or interested right now), but methinks we'll see 'em once more before the series ends once and for all.

I think I've got a better question: How was Anateo able to fire his sidearm a standard Earth-style gun, it seems in the vacuum of space? You can't have ignition without oxygen! (See Firefly: "Our Mrs. Reynolds")

Poor propmastering. In the past the show has made clever use of prop "shrouds" on top of existing pistols, etc. With the Lucian Alliance they've been decidedly lazy, even using a German Luger at one point and hoping we wouldn't notice.

In any case, it's SUPPOSED to be an alien gun, and as such it might be gas-propelled, or something. As I noticed, it came with dodgy sound effects and everything.

As for the language barrier, the issue is that the writers decided long ago that it was a non-issue. So nyeeehhhh.

Like, say, the Tok'ra? What're they up to, with the Goa'uld gone? Under any circumstances, Earth really should have some support vessels. Having a single hyperspace capable ship in theatre is a very bad idea if they can have a couple other cheap ships to support it.

And what are the Asgard doing now that they don't have the Replicators eating away their galaxy? They really don't seem to care about the Ori threatening the Universe.

They DID send an O'Neil class starship at the battle of the supergate. Not much since then, admittedly.

They did get both the Prometheus and the Leonov blown up. It wasn't exactly their plan to only have one ship in the Milky Way.

Thing is though, I wonder what we're gonna see, if anything, before the end of the series. The Odyssey was barely ready to go late last year, and the Korolev was probably due for regular service at some point in the first half of the season this year. At the prospective rate of 2/year, we SHOULD have one more ready by the end of the season/series - though whether or not we'll be able to actually see her is another question. methinks that if nothing else, the producers are deliberately trying to keep the number of available ships low to prevent too many accusations of Trekkism, thereby keeping most travel in the show still gate-bound.

You'd think they'd build some smaller and cheaper ships to have on hand for stuff like rescue runs and whatnot.

As for Colonel Emerson, I couldn't see him without thinking of "The Wedding Singer".
