That makes it... what? The fifth or sixth time that a TV station is rebroadcasting the entire series from start to finish in the past two years?

Anyways, if you're serious about "Star Trek" at all, then you have my personal guarantee that you will LOVE "Babylon 5."

Starting Monday, March 11 @ 7:00 PM on the Sci-Fi Channel.

In that, we are proud. And Happy.

For soon, if the reruns of this and other high quality TV such as when Hot Dog Vendors Attack Part IX, continue to catch your fancy, you rund a grave risk my friend. A risk that is that of you being dumbed down to the level of us current peons, and thusly making us less intimidated in your presence.

YES! THE BEGINNINGS OF A B5 VERSUS STAR TREK ARGUMENT!

*Trumpets Flare*
A William Kieths Soundalike: "The King, of the castle that is on a hill which the King owns. The Castle, not the hill. Although he does own the hill as well, mind you. This King, in all his glory has called for the ultimate soldiers to defend his kingdom in this, the battle of all battles, which is to say it is the penultimate. Penultimate as in more than ultimate.

He requests the attention of the only honorable people who are able to stem the tide of the insidious agents of logic, clarity and the misunderstood - yet apparently evil - proper grammatical function!

These people are known as:

The FANBOYS!

*trumpets flare*

Here come they, the illiterate, over-emotional and societal rejects, that will argue until free of breath, food, light and cleanliness until the age-old question, that is on the minds of every single human being ever in the history of the world ever, even Jesus, although the show about the Expedition through the Stars and the other show about a pseudo-Exepedition through the stars and basement CGI weren't around during the reign of the Lord and King. He still wondered about it.

So, young fanboys, pass on your wisdom and trite discontentment at the doings of the powers that be, to all future generations, so they may live in peace, harmony, and continue the pointless, useless and official badge of loserdom, the battle of the syndicated sixty minute long extra-terra drama shows.

Begone.

Sorry, but B5 was cool for about 4 episodes (and that's only because we got them before the US. HA!).

And Star Trek has never been cool.

"Babylon 5" was (and still is) everything that "Deep Space Nine" aspired to be, but was not. A galactic war that actually affected people. The deaths or other rather nasty ends of characters that MATTERED, and weren't just thrown in because the actress wanted to leave. *COUGH*DAX*COUGH* The story arcs were actually connected, and didn't fall apart in the last few episodes.

Sure there were some problems -- Londo's accent, for one. But I'll take Londo vs. G'Kar or Garibaldi vs. Bester over Sisko vs. Dukat any day.

Alfred Bester... now there's one of my favorite topics. Alfred Bester is THE most EVIL character in science fiction. He beats out even the old classics like Darth Vader... precisely because he doesn't SEEM so evil... until you sit in a room with him for a few minutes. He's so casually smug, so superior (Homo superior, that is). He thinks nothing of using the "mundanes" like toys, and tossing them aside when he's done.

"Babylon 5" is everything I wish "Star Trek" was, and so much more. I won't go into all of it here, I'd bore you.

And if Bester's Homo superior, would that make him a mutant?

SPACE being Canada's answer to the Sci-Fi Channel.

And, seriously, am I the only one who doesn't notice anything wrong with the dialogue? I guess I just don't pick things to bits like some people... I actually watch something and enjoy it, not desparately try to find something wrong with it. The only time I notice anything is when the acting is particularly bad (monotone voice, etc), or if it's really crappy VFX (like a guy getting a stick in his armpit when he's supposed to be getting stabbed).

Babylon 5 had a story in it. That's what makes it great, in my opinion. Also it has some of the coolest ships I've ever seen. They were even hired to make a few of the best ships on Voyager (Species 8472 ships and the Krenim timeship).

Also some of the aliens were actially very different than humanoids. The Shadows are absolutely awesome! And again, the company was hired to make Species 8472 on Voyager.

as much as i love trek, i think that the best of B5 beats out all but the VERY best of TNG and TOS in terms of quality. don't even TRY to tell me that the dialogue is any worse in B5 than in DS9 or that mess that bragga made, i mean Voyager. trek has had some cheese, which most trek fans simply overlook. i also think that the worst episodes of trek are worse than the worst episodes of B5. also, the continuity of B5 was better, probably because larry niven was an advisor. B5 actually shows a credible view of the galaxy, with lots of non exacytly looking like human aliens, and many varied political interests. (yes, the centauri outwardly looked like humans, but their unique physiology was shown in several episodes, and it was mentioned that humans thought they were related to centauri's until they saw the *ahem* unique attributes of the centauri). also, i think that many of the ship ideas, especially concerning biological tech, was used in B5 better than in trek. B5 also has a more epic feel, in my opinion, than even the dominion war. B5 wasn't great all the time, but its good sides transcends the bad sides. by the way, centauri prime was the home planet of the centauri, and the republic was their empire. if there was an earth empire, this planet might be called earth prime. however, despite immensely enjoying B5, i still like trek better because of its unique trek ideology, and the fact that TOS and TNG were like horatio hornblower, but in space, which is very cool. well, the tech stuff doesn't hurt either

Larry Niven? I think you mean Harlan Ellison, and he didn't seem to have much to do with the series at all. (Though I suspect his support went a long way towards getting it off the ground.)

Anyway, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think JMS produced a very brave and interesting but at the same time deeply flawed show. Look, I like it as much as anyone, you know. I just finished watching the final three episodes all at once, for Valen's sake. Still, there we are.

Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :

As nice as the so-called "widescreen" version is...it isn't. All they did was blackbar the top & bottom, theus losing a couple key details. Example: at the end of "Severed Dreams," the closing shot of the closeup on the Nightwatch "TRAITORS CAN'T HIDE" poster has been completely fragged.

they didn't just black bar. the original film version had a slightly different aspect than tv. it isn't really WIDESCREEN per se, but it wasn't just blackbarred. the scifi channel website had an article about it.

Actually, the screw-up with the widescreen edition was the fault of Warner Bros., I believe. The show really WAS filmed in the widescreen format.

I'm surprised to find so many pro-B5 members here! Usually you don't get a lot of people like that at a Trek-oriented board.

Re: my earlier comment about Londo's accent-- I actually really liked Londo's accent, after the first few episodes. It took a little getting used to, but it was an interesting change.

B5 had much more of a depth to it than any Trek series. I am a Trek fan first and foremost, but I always admit that it is far too utopian, and does not seem probable that the corrupt world we see today will blossom into a civilzation in which we aren't greedy and powerhungry @$$holes. Also Londo had to sacrifice everything for the Centauri Republic and there are some things that will stay alive forever: "What are you gonna do Mollari, blow up the island?", the legendary confrontation between Londo Mollari, and Mr Morden the Shadows advocate. The result of that action: "They wan't YOU Londo." when the Regent tells him about the Drakh, and the Keeper is implanted onto him.
And the classic of a Dictator trying to take the Earth down with him: "He killed himself, and he left a note on his desk with the words "Scorched Earth" written on it."
Then ofcourse Sheridan decided to sacrifice himself and his first ship the "Agamemnon" to save Earth, but his old academy teacher and great nemesis in the war came in thorough and jump gate and saved him.

B5 has a series of legendary events and sayings that people will always remember, it may been only five seasons, but it was the best five seasons ever. And the movies were the perfect addition.

There's 3 series of books that's been done since the show went off. First is the Telepath trilogy, second is the Centauri trilogy and lastly is the Technomage trilogy series.

They're damn good reading IMHO and yes, they are CANON (I think). Or so says JMS.
