Anyone catching this on Cartoon Network (along with the OAV Miniseries 08th MS Team at midnight)? This isn't Gundam Wing, just in case your wondering, this is the granddaddy of the series. Man i love early 80s Giant Robot anime. None of the new anime crap they show on WB and stuff.

I bought and watched the original "Mobile Suit Gundam Movies I" a few months ago. The realism, when they cut from live action sequences to seeing the battle from the pilot's eyes, with the gauges and the targeting brackets, was cool. The lightsabre ripoff "beamsabre" was a bit obvious but acceptable.

Although I had problems getting into the characters and the story. The makeup of the present world rule and the military forces, as well as the enemies' ditto was a bit vague, it escaped me somewhat. But I think I'll try Vol. II as well, see where this is going. :-)

And I too am surprised at the quality and thought put into it.

So, is it like the other mangas and animes? Is the show you mention made before the movie, and so builds a more thorough foundation than by watching the movies only?

I've got another question, for those who have seen the Macross series RoboTech, with the english voices and names. Does it really end after the 20th episode "Paradise Lost", 7th volume, right in the middle of everything?
I've scanned the shelves in my sci-fi shop and the damned tapes only go up to vol.7.

Umm. i didn't think there was any live action in the original Gundam series. I know there is in one of the newer incarnations of it, but definately not the original.

As for your question. THe series (Mobile Suit Gundam) came first, but much like Star Trek did badly in ratings, but became popular in its reruns. I think the movies take the series and squeezes them into three movies. So the movies aren't a sequel exactly, since its the same story as the series, just retold. After that came several other series, which unfortunately isn't available outside of Japan. There's a couple miniseries, video series out there too, which i think Cartoon network will show after 08th MS Team. Gundam 0080 and Gundam 0083.

Yeah, the beam sabres are quite obviously light sabres just a whole lot bigger. But it should be noted, that the series came out only a couple years after the first star wars, so i'm really not that surprised.

I have seen a commercial for it, and co-opted the title for my collection of quasi-swear words. It's good for admiring the occasional attractive (or rather, quasi-attractive) female.

Vanguard: I didn't mean live action as in real persons and footage, just live as in active mecha battles. You either saw the suits from third person or sometimes from the pilot's POV, that's what I meant. Sorry for the confusion.

I've seen 8th MS Team all the way through and Gundam Wing. I thought 8MST was pretty good.
