What have you guys heard? I'm pretty curious, I heard something about Tolkien-dragons in modern time. Sounds cool, but could get very shitty if done wrong (well duh). So?

It has Matthew McConaughey in it. Don't get your hopes up.

Damnit, for the love of god, make the Gates of Fire movie.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

It also has Alexander Siddig in it.

Posted by EdipisReks (Member # 510) on :

it also looks very stupid.

I have to agree...

Posted by Nim Pim (Member # 205) on :

More stupid than Deep Rising?

Is that the one with Treat Williams? Because I quite liked that. . .

Lee: Bahuh??? So then I suppose "Virus" with J-Lee Curtis and Donald Sutherland went down nicely in your gullet as well? And perchance "Soldier"?

These new 1:25-movies signify the new explosion of cheap, short action-movies by people with a bunch of computer-nerd relatives who control Lightwave and 3dMAX and work for free...
They're ok in the background at a party, when you can drink and have fun with them...

Given the parlous state of much of the audiovisual SF out there, I think if you expect your genre stuff to be all of extremely high quality before you can enjoy it, then you're not going to have a great deal to watch. I like a good piece of schlocky SF now and then. Deep Rising and Soldier fit the bill quite nicely. Virus, however, didn't do it for me. Reign of Fire may well be in the same category, in which case I'll wait for it to appear on Sky MovieMax, the home of schlock. All they ever show is crummy SF films (saw a quite-ggod predator-clone there the other night, enjoyed it more than I'd thought I would) including the pilots for Witchblade and The Invisible Man; and Eric Roberts films. Anyone who makes a B-grade SF film with Eric Roberts in it is on to a winner.

Virus is so bad dogs howl at the moon. It's one of only two movies I've ever walked out of. Several other people did too...the only other movie I've seen have that many people walk out on it was this nasty fucking explotation zombie flick they showed once, where the Zombie guy was eating a still living woman's small intestine, and the shit was flying...I mean, hey, I was into it, happily munching my popcorn and watching away... but I understand why they walked...

To garner such a response Virus is a Bad movie, and not in a good way.

Back on Subject: Reign of Fire looks cheesy but fun.

It has me looking forward to it enough to see it within the first month of it's release. If it makes it that long, at least.

In other words: I'm looking forward to it about as much as I am the new Star Trek flick. Gonna watch it, not expecting a cinematic masterpiece, or even really a good movie.

Just something to take my mind off the fact that someday I'll die.

Because death is SUCH the right bitch. But a bitchin' bass player & a snappy dresser. Remember:

"You might be a king or a little street sweeper, but sooner or later you'll dance with the Reaper! Get DOWN with your bad self!"

I'm going to leave my higher mental processes at home, and watch the damn thing for eye-candy value. I mean, tanks! It's got tanks!

Them's is fightin' werds where I came from!

So did Contact, A Time To Kill and the greatest 70's flick ever made: Dazed & Confused.

Forgot, did you? Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4 there was.

Starred in that, did he???

Voggie Pootie: "if you expect your genre stuff to be all of extremely high quality before you can enjoy it, then you're not going to have a great deal to watch."

I agree, I got through Red Planet, Mission to Mars and that thing with Dennis Hopper as a space trucker (Heeeelp!!! Turn it oph, I can't feel my legs!) with a bag of chips and a big coke. Musn't forget the dip.
But that was last year, now I only rent videos if it's with buddies or my bro and his gf, it's more fun that way.

My brother rented some SF-flick with Kris Kristofferson as a cyborg, I'm not going to see that. Evah. Nievah evah.

But admit that there's been a new trend of sci-Fi/Action-movies since about 1995 (I tend to think of "Mortal Kombat 1" as one of the milestones, and I like it) that, with the mutual Medium-to-low-CGI, has created a new subgenre.

What do we call it?

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

"Shit"?

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

Maybe, but you need some way to convey that some of it is at least watchable. "Edible shit?"

Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :

Uh. How about "semi-watchable shit"? Since, er, I don't want to eat a video tape.

Posted by TSN (Member # 31) on :

But eating shit is another matter entirely?

Let's not forget the Nemesis oeuvre.

Posted by Nim Pim (Member # 205) on :

The what?

Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :

You know. The Nemesis 'oeuvre'.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Nemesis
Nemesis 2
Nemesis 3
Nemesis 4

And, for Jeff, all alone in the wilderness: Oeuvre

Posted by Snay (Member # 411) on :

I'm not alone. I'm with Nimmy.

Argh. Why am I not alone?

Posted by Nim Pim (Member # 205) on :

Well Sol had me thinking "hors d'oeuvre" and I got all hungry and stuff, but come to think of it, I've never seen a movie as an appetizer.

Posted by Nim Pim (Member # 205) on :

Damn that was keff. I have to stop drinking at the office.
