Article Here

Brandis was best known to the genre as teen-idol Lucas Wolenczek on "seaQuest DSV". He apparently committed suicide. Condolences.

First Crewman Cutler, now this... what's going on?

(I was secretly a fan of SeaQuest)

Darwin got him.

Another one. WTF?!

Why can't this happen to Michael Jackson?! [Mad]

How strange.

The composer for the first X-Men movie diesd this week as well.

That really sucks.

Well, they say that deaths in the world of sci-fi obscurity always come in threes...

I wonder who of any of the Trek cast members will be next?
Ok, not a very tasteful question probably, but after DeForest Kelley's death I started wondering. These guys aren't getting any younger.

and we are?????

Yeah, I read about Brandis's death on another board. I was a fan of seaQuest for the first two seasons. I liked Brandis in the role of Lucas. Yeah, his character was a copy of Wesley Crusher, but Lucas was an egotistical braggert who was also a nice kid. It's shame.

Michael Kamen!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Really!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I thought he did a far superior score than the Editor/Composer in X2. Michael Kamen also scored the Metallica Symphony thing.

That's crazy! What did he die of?

NOW the kid from SeaQuest DSV!?! Funny they've started repeating this show late nights on Pay TV.

Has anyone heard what the cause of death of Crewman Cutler was??

Kamen died of heart attack, details are up at The BBC.
Brandis' death is being ruled a sucidie by the coroner's office.

Sucks.

Well, why not just say "and Michael Kamen died this week as well?" It's not like he was totally unknown for anything else apart from the score for X-Men.

I suspect that if you could do searches of old DARPANet posts, then one on 11th July 1989 would bemoan the passing of "that guy who played Zeus in Clash of the Titans!" 8)

Michael won't die....he's already pre-embalmed.

Come to think of it...he may be just wanting to be the lead in The Mummy III.

Naaa...they'd never keep the R rating that way: too scary.

Zues is dead!?!
HOLY FUCK!
NOW we're really losing talent.
That part where he transported Perseus off the island was Oscar material!

Really, stop bitchin': at least I brought Kamen's death to your attention, otherwise you'd be waiting for him to score some new movie.
When X-Men three hits theatres, you'd have been saying "Man, they really should have got Kamen to score that one" and of course, we'd have called you a dumbass for not knowing he was dead.
See the embarassment I've spared you?
You owe me.
Big.
Hope you didint need that firstborn son: I've got a little stem -cell business on the side you know...

Of the two, it is sad that Brandis' death is given far more attention than Kamen's: Kamen had a far greater body of work and never partnered up with a annoying CGI dolphin or Chuck Norris.
Except for scoring Die-Hard. Kamen said he could've done it without the dolphin, but I think the clicks and whistles really add to the soundtrack and Chuck's martial arts prowess and moe haircut kept the orchestra in line nicely.

Let's see what the overreaction judges think of the performance!

KLN -- 1.9
ROM -- 2.1
PRS -- 0.9
MNB -- 1.0
BRG -- 0.0
USA -- 7.8
SHA -- 0.0

So, sorry, but you get the lead medal.

Overreacting!?! It's ZUES we're talking about here!
If he'd said "The actor that played Posideon died" I'd have let it pass but this....!

That medal better be gold and not, you now, chocolate.

What is "SHA"?
"Sha na nna"? I will not be judged by Bowser! He uses steroids!

The judges were a select panel of members of the following peoples: Klingon, Romulan, Perseid, Minbari, Borg, and Shadows. I also got the opinion of the greatest overreactors ever: the American people.

The Americans!?!
Who does Europe call every time Germany gets a hard on?
You guessed it baby!

I think I might have seen that guy in a couple of other movies too...

Sad about Brandis. I always thought he was WAY less irritating than Wesley, and there were a couple of episodes with him and Roy Scheider that were bordering on touching. Why do you suppose he did it? I mean it must be kind of tough to be a 27-year-old teen idol. But I imagine there had to be more to it than the fact that Tiger Beat had stopped calling.

It's like all previous attempts at comedy have been rendered useless by this outburst. We are going to have to rewrite the dictionary on humour, because only now have we been taught what it truely funny.

Balaam, I haven't heard anything new about Brandis's death. The medical examiner is holding off on releasing information from the completed autopsy, and I haven't heard anything about a suicide note.

The most outlandish theory I've heard is that Brandis was on an acne medication that had a side effect of suicidal depression. Wil Wheaton posted what might be the most reasonable: difficulty from transistioning from child star to adult star. I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

It's possible he suffered from clinical depression.
His career was more alive than many: he hada role in Heart's War last year.

"Zeus". It's spelled "Zeus". Like "Suez" backward.

Yeah. And like me, you only know that because you looked him up on the IMDb.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

Speaking of his record in the IMDb, I agree that it could very well be depression brought on in part by his acting career. Just looking at it, it seems like Brandis peaked with seaQuest. No noteable television appearances since 1993. After seaQuest ended production, it seems he only appeared in TV movies and independent films (with the exception of a bit part in Hart's War).

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

Exactly. And for some reason maybe he was unable to get past that. Contrast him with Wil Wheaton, for example - WW's fall from fame might be said to be the greater, given his appearance in many high-profile movies, and of course Star Trek; yet he seems to have weathered it far better. Whether that's due to all the various things he does instead, that you can read about on his website, or the obviously-happy family life he has (I've seen no mention of JB being married or having a partner of any kind), or him just being generally more stable, it's impossible to say.

Actually, NPR mentioned Heart's War as one of Brandis' credits but completely left off Seaquest.
Kinda odd that.

Everybody's diffrent: Brandis' death is tragic to be sure but probably 90% of child stars went nowhere and survived.
Some even came back from relative obscurity like Rick Schroeder.

"Actually, NPR mentioned Heart's War as one of Brandis' credits but completely left off Seaquest. Kinda odd that."

Not really. Think of what most listeners' reaction would have been.

"Jonathan Brandis, of TV's 'SeaQuest'..."

"Sea what?"

"...and the recent film Hart's War..."

"Oh, yeah. Bruce Willis..."

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Yes, most of NPR's listener's wouldnt have memories of anything fast a few months ago...

Now which former child star will NYPD Blue place opposite Sipowicz?

Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :

Horshack.

I'd like to think the fact they've already used Mark-John-Paul-Steve-Dave Gosselllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrr or whatever his name is, wouldn't stop them bringing Dustin Diamond onto the show. . .

Posted by Cartman (Member # 256) on :

"Gosselaar". Dutch, you learn it, you love it. B)

This is probaly bad taste but do you think that they will bury Jonathan Brandis out to sea?

Posted by Lee (Member # 393) on :

No, a dolphin'd only swim out and bring him back, then expect to be rewarded with fish for its trouble. . .

Posted by Malnurtured Snay (Member # 411) on :

I re-watched "Hart's War" a couple of weeks ago - Brandis was in that? Did he have a speaking role?
