In the new Battlestar Galactica miniseries there's a bit of dialogue that implies a kind of sci-fi version of the military alphabet--you know, alpha, bravo, foxtrot, sierra, etc. Just for fun I tried to fill in the rest.
Here's what I have so far. Some letters are still empty and some I'm not entirely happy with, so feel free to make suggestions.
Apogee Ballistic Constellation D E Frequency Galaxy Halo Ion Jet Kepler Lunar Momentum Nebula Orbit Periastron or Perigee Quasar Rotation Solar Telemetry U V Wavelength Xray Yaw Z

The new Battlestar Galactica miniseries really sucked.

Which has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread. Feel free to reactivate the "Battlestar Galactica (The Next Generation)" if you want to discuss it some more.

Discovery.
Eclipse. Equinox.
Vector.

Saying vector when you may want to vector some vipers in to an area, especially with a V callsign could get really screwed up....

...and the pilot's name is Victor.
I didn't intend for this to be a BSG-specific list per se, so much as a generic, skiffy version of the military alphabet. "Kepler" might be a stretch in a Colonial alphabet.
Although...it occurs to me that Moore is going to need to make up one for the BSG series. Having used it in the pilot, he's painted himself into a corner. Unless they just drops the idea and hope the audience doesn't notice.
Thanks to Aban Rune for his suggestions. I hadn't though of any of those.

What if the pilot's name is Charlie or Roger?
A whole sketch from Airplane ensues.

Where do you think Lucas got his Episode 1 joke(s) from?

Mad magazine? I sure didint laugh at anything in Ep.I except the horrific dialogue, terrible acting from little Anakin and the notion that Vader and Jesus were created the same way.

emmaculate deception of course.....
Which could be a touchy subject.... For those with hands left anyway....

Not that I don't appreciate the witty banter (although I don't ), but I could still use some suggestions for U and Z.

V could also be Vega.
Z: Zvezda, Zarya, Zenith
U: Universe, Uranus

Harry, you're awesome. I could kiss you.

Saying "your anus" on TV could get them fined by the FCC. They need to be careful.

So.. what is this N7242C that this topic's title refers to?

I was kidding.

I know, but the FCC would do something stupid like that.....

A bit of dialogue in the Sci Fi Channel's recent Battlestar Galactica remake. N7242C was the tail number of Adama's old viper.
The (currently) final version:
Apogee Ballistic Constellation Discovery Eclipse Frequency Galaxy Halo Ion Jet Kepler Lunar Momentum Nebula Orbit Perigee Quasar Rotation Solar Telemetry Universe Vector Wavelength Xray Yaw Zenith
Whaddya think? Should I anonymail it to Ron Moore?

I can appreciate that you based it off the actual dialogue from the miniseries but as a real phonetic alphabet for the BSG Universe you would just be asking for confusion. Most of the words listed could be used in the common vernacular of navigators or pilots in an interstellar capable fleet.
Posted by MarianLH (Member # 1102) on :
That's occurred to me, along with the fact that the real military alphabet is deliberately composed of short, one- or two-syllable words for rapid communication under combat conditions. But, as you say, I based this list off the actual show dialogue.

Once we know what they are, mabye the twelve colony names would cover some of the letters:
C-Caprica (for example)
Just to get off the obviously american-military terms slightly.

The twelve colonies were named as follows in the original series:
