Since we've got an X-303 request thread, I'm going to go ahead and start my mooching thread too. All this talk about Stargate recently has got me wanting to do a piece similar to the one I did of the Aegian Class awhile back. A technical style drawing with callouts and cutaways and what not.

I've looked on Google for a solid hour and haven't come up with anything better than so-so screencaps of the SGC's Gate. Does anyone have any good, closeup photos of the surface detailing? Even a render of someone's super-accurate mesh would be great.

Sweet. Thanks alot Mark, those are pretty cool. I don't have any 3-D software, so downloading the mesh won't do much good, but I checked out the galleries on that first site.

If anyone has any good closeups of the filming prop, that'd be super-terrific-awesome. I was gifted season 6 of the series the other day, and the new opening credits have lots of killer closeups. I'm thinking of trying to freeze frame and see what I can gather from that.

There are steps at the end of the ramp!?! How does the MALP get up the steps?? And the hand railings/width of the ramp is so narrow - at that width they'd get destroyed by the forming event horizon/wormhole/woosh. Besides that, that's a pretty good Gate Departure room render! (link 2)

Hmmm... yah, I think the ramp on the real set comes up higher in the Gate and can therefore be wider. But I'm pretty sure there are steps at the end of it. The vortex forms kind of in the middle, only taking up about 50% of the diameter of the Gate, so it wouldn't necessarily take out the ramp.

What is inaccurate, though, is that I'm pretty sure there's a gap in the ramp where the event horizon forms. The ramp doesn't extend continuously through the Stargate.

There is a 'deck' part of the ramp on the otherside - but yeah I don't think it passes through the stargate... it would surely be destroyed the first time the gate is shut down - like the back of Kawolski's head in the second episode of Season 1.

Double.

Actually, it does. This is one of the bigger goofs they make in the show. Obviously, the ramp is there such that the actors have something to walk onto when they go through the CG event horizon.

There is a saving grace, though - the ramp is actually built in two sections that join at the point where the EH forms. I don't have pictures, but in some episodes you can see that there is a very short, separate section of the ramp that occupies this area (it's so the actors know when to take the "big step"). Anyway, one fandom explanation is that this ramp section always swings down and away just as the EH forms, and swings back when the wormhole is disengaged. It's a reach, but not wholly implausible.

Anyone have an idea how large Thor's ship is?
It's so dark and briefly shown onscreen that I have trouble with it.

"How does the MALP get up the steps??"

Well, since they don't know where the MALP is being sent when it goes through the gate, don't you think it's designed to handle less-than-smooth terrain?

90% of the gates on the other side have steps, at least.

The MALPs have front and back tires that are elevated off the ground, IIRC. That would probably help them climb and descend stairs. They probably also have flexible suspension allowing for rough terrain. They apparently don't handle sand very well, though (see Tok'ra Part 1).
