Everything we've seen on the new BSG so far points to there being no other intelligent aliens species out there, at least not within range of the Colonies. Also, the Colonial Defense Force (Colonial Military, whatever they call themselves) seems to be portrayed as a fairly singular unit since before the first Cylon War. So my question is, why did they need such a powerful military force in the first place? I'm sure the different colonies have had their problems with each other, but they all contribute personnel to the same military. Even if they had been at odds before, there would have been no need to sustain large warships after coming together. Maybe it was a result of whatever happened at Kobol?

Opinions/specualtion?

Uh, my impression was the colonies actually warred with each other until the construction of the Cylons. I don't think we have any evidence that there was a joint twelve colony military BEFORE the Cylon wars -- each colony could have had their own military, and during the war incorporated all of them into one force.

Yeah, isn't it stated somewhere that it's only been 52 (?) years since the signing of the Articles?

Yeah, that's my impression too... that the Colonials were fighting each other until the Cylon War. My guess is that the idea of creating the Cylons to "make life easier on the Colonies" actually meant that oh-so-wonderful idea of "creating robot soldiers to do the fighting for us". No wonder the Cylons revolted!

Looked it up and in 'Colonial Day' it's stated to be the fifty second anniversary of the signing of the Articles of Colonisation. Which would fit in with around the beginning of the First Cylon War.
