The comic-book superhero I loved the best has been patiently awaiting his big-screen debut in Jon Favreau's adaptation. But now there's real news (to the extent that the E! channel can be considered 'real').
Robert Downey Jr. is ready to become one serious metalhead--the actor has signed on to play the title role in Iron Man, Paramount Pictures' feature film based on the famed Marvel superhero.
Downey will play Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and brilliant inventor, who, after a near-fatal accident, builds a high-tech, nearly impenetrable suit of armor that gives him superhuman strength and other powers, which he uses to fight the baddies.
...
How do we feel about this?

We feel like NO.
My Iron Man will ALWAYS be Andrew Divoff, the guy on the right here:

Considering how bad Fantastic 4 was, I'm not to enthusiastic about Iron Man, which is sad because I really like Iron Man.

Oh gee, I wonder if they will give Downey real armor or make it CGI... I miss the times when RoboCop was the only good cyborg on the block. Learning robot pantomime like that takes some dedication.
I like the new Iron Man comics, with the semi-computer generated pics and the washed-out colors. And the new suit is cool. Still can't bear the Gable moustache, though, only Gable could wear that thing without looking metro.

I hate to break it to you, but the Iron Man movie is probably going to the "Teh Suck".
The Hulk was "Teh Suck" X-Men 1 was a meh X2 was "Teh Suck" Fantastic 4 was "Teh Uber Suck" Daredevil was "Teh Suck" Elektra was "Teh Suck" Spiderman 1 was a Meh and Spiderman 2 was "Teh Suck"
All of those movies was just a cash-in on the popularity of the comic books without anything realy mind blowingly awesome.

Here's the one that really leaves me wondering.

Dude, Ant-Man!

I still say Timothy Dalton.

Oh man I could have the perfect link here, but I do not remember it. Perfect.
But no. Like tears in the rain.

Absolutely- were he not the worst actor ever filmed, that is. He looks perfect though- see Alex Ross's pencil sketch with dalton in the Iron Man aromr.
I speak from the heart when I say this (as I own Iron Man 1-300 and he's my all-time favorite charcater), I like Robert Downy as Tony Stark...Stark is a hero that occasionally is a total bastard that uses everyone he knows to get things done.
They really need to cast a strong Jim Rhodes though: Denzel Washington would be perfect (see Man on Fire), but would probably never do a comic-book movie.
As to the other Marvel movies- I liked both Spider-Man movies a lot, I loved the second X-Men movie, but X-3 was sucktastic. Bad in a way only the Sci-Fi channel should ever be allowed to get away with.

I'VE GOT IT NOW.
Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
IT MIGHT NOT BE THERE?!?
Failed. Anyway, it was here and it was glorious, but now you will only get a fleeting glimpse of Avalon.

That picture's worth a thousand blows to your groin....with a stun gun. You've sullied my eyes with such filth- I hope you're happy now.
I'm sending Steve Ditko's 80-something year-old ass to go pummel you.

Hey, Abbie -- how about Billy Dee Williams as Rhodey? Or is he getting too old now?

Funny, I thought X2 and Spider-Man 2 were much better than their predecessors. Not that I would call them "mind-blowingly awesome," mind you.
The upcoming release that has me scratching my head is Ghost Rider, starring none other than NICHOLAS CAGE in the title role.

I'd still love to see Ving Rhames as Luke Cage. Power Man & Iron Fist would be fucking AWESOME.
Posted by Da_bang80 (Member # 528) on :
X2 wasn't all that bad, I hated Spiderman 2. I left the theatre halfway through the movie.
Nick Cage is a good actor, he might be able to pull it off.

Tony Stark / Iron Man = Gary Oldman Luke Cage / Powerman = Michael Clarke Duncan
and of course....
MY favorite comic character:
ROM, Spackenight = Me (minus a FEW pounds)

Tyrese is a dick, & Power Man is nothing without Iron Fist.

Funny I was just reading about a failed Superman movie which would have featured Nicholas Cage as the Man of Steel. I'm not sure how that would have turned out.
Posted by WizArtist II (Member # 1425) on :
a chinless Superman....that's what
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
MOst of the ideas behind that Superman movie went into Wild Wild West- giant mechanical spider and all (or so Kevin Smith's story of the Superman project goes).
Posted by Mars Needs Women (Member # 1505) on :
Yeah that guy had some giant spider fetish or something.

I feel like RDJ could bring some intensity and charisma to Tony Stark, but I worry about his ability to bring calm/cool.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Hmmm...if Hollywood can make terrible actors like Val Kilmer and Keanneu Reeves remotely cool, there'll be no problem.
Posted by Shik (Member # 343) on :
Keanu Reeves bad (in most things), yes. Val Kilmer...not so much.
Posted by Jason Abbadon (Member # 882) on :
Michael Mann once said of Val Kilmer's acting "If I were to direct a move about Val Kilmer's life, I still would not cast Val Kilmer."
It seems the 10-plus takes Kilmer needed to get scenes in Heat right did not enamour the director to him.
On a personal note- I think he's sucked pretty hard in everything since Real Genius. Of course, I think Kevin Costner sucks in everything except The Big Chill.
