Sci-fi today has been blaring commercials that tonight begins "an all-new season of Stargate: Atlantis."
I thought they just took a bit of a break?

They did. Break's over.
Tonight is "Be All My Sins Remember'd", promising a cow's bumload of space battles, including our favorite Earth starships Apollo and Daedalus!

Yes, I know, but that's hardly a new *season* is it? I mean are we in season 5 now?

The Sci-Fi Channel has some bizarre ideas about what constitutes a "season". For their advertising purposes, it's a new season. For everyone else's purposes, it's not.

NBCUniversal sucks.

Yes it's still season 4. Just a new year.

Andrew: They specifically say "new season" which is why I was confused...thought they'd actually gone and made the second half of 4 into 5.

It seems they say this same thing every year. By their reckoning, this should be season 8 and SG-1 lasted 20 seasons...

On Sci-Fi, they've been calling it the "summer season" and "winter season" when there was a four-month break. Since SG-1 finished, they decided to separate their games and play SGA and Galactica completely seperately instead of a one-two ratings punch. Bad move IMO, but it's what they've decided.
SGA is garunteed a fifth full season, which they're working on now - I think it's the ONLY one at Sci-Fi being worked on now since we Canucks aren't affected by the WGA strike.
