Okay, so I know I'm not usually the one that starts these threads, but I can resist the urge no longer.

Ahem.

FORD!

Okay, so he was a hallucination and was onscreen for all of five seconds, but still... It's lucky I wasn't eating anything at the time, otherwise food would have gone everywhere.

The rest of the episode was decent enough, except for perhaps the ending. I'm sure the beginning of next week's episode will be awkward at best when Woolsey just shows up and says "I'm your new boss."

I really felt like the ending was an "Oh, we've got 8 minutes to wrap this all up...where's da magic wand?"

I did like the line "Make that ship go away"

Otherwise it just seemed after the beam up of Ronin and Shepard that the story went into 15x fast forward mode and POOF!

Is the new season out!?!

Edit: It is! WOO!!

So excited!! After Doctor Who finished last week I was wondering what I had to download!! [Big Grin]

Yeah, the whole episode seemed pretty predictable. Except for Ford, of course! I had to look up on gateworld.net whether or not he was still alive.

Does anyone know if they brought Canaan (sp?) along with them? You know, the father of the baby? And it was pretty obvious that Trip, er, Michael took the jumper, and isn't dead.

I liked it a bit more than the rest of you seemed to, but maybe it's because I watched it like it was a typical mid-season ep instead of a proper season premier.

I wondered about Kanin (which is how my brain imagines the spelling, who knows if I'm right) too. They didn't say whether they brought him or not; I kept waiting for a throwaway "He's in the brig" or...something...

Highlight of the episode: That WONDERFUL pull-back from the collapsed building out into space and across the galaxy to Michael's cruiser.

Also loved the effect of Michael's cruiser failing to make it to hyperspace.

A future episode supposedly deals with this. Remember, they did manage to rescue most of the remaining Athosians who didn't get spare nostrils grafted on their faces (though I still woner why Halling, the big tall leader of the group, wasn't the first to go). I'm sure they'll do their best trying to rehabilitate Kanaan (thanks Gateworld for sp) with Keller's help.

-Incidentally, there was a significant screwup in this episode:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wrTOwoU6K8Y

-Everything else was about right, though. It's too bad they already did the "Daedalus disabled with a Wraith ship next door that we'll sneak inside" thing from two premieres ago.

-And Carter gets her exit from Atlantis, which segways into the forthcoming "Continuum" release with one line. I hope they'll bring her back at some point, since she'll have nothing to do now at the SGC. Perhaps she'll get command of the Phoenix after all?

-And neat cameo from Francks as Ford, even for all of one shot. they didn't even ask him to take off his earring. OTOH, Shep IS hallucinating. [Razz] But I do hope we haven't seen the alst of him - his character WAS working with its new direction to some extent, and I think it deserves closure.

-Speaking of return engagements, the cute officer Vega we see here blazing away with a machine gun will apparently come back.

Regards the 'screwup': you don't really know WHICH name of her father's Teyla was taking. It might even be a family name - it could be an ancestor who was called Tegaan... 'daughter of Tegaan'. AND we don't know - Tegaan might be her mother.

Agreed on both counts, but the *sound* they played while pulling back made me want to dig my cochleas out with a fork.

Agreed about your interpretation of the 'screwup' as well. Our male-dominated society naturally assumes it's her father... [Wink] I tend to think she'd use her mother's name in the "daughter of" bit.

Ooh, I loved that cute gun-totin' chick. I know it's a bit sexist, but hot chicks in black leather firing big guns amongst rubble at night? Hell....yes.

Hm. I suppose you guys can be right, but I'm pretty sure that Teyla has referred at SOME point that her dad was leader of her people. Still doesn't make too much of a difference, if Athosian tradition is to simply say the name of your birth mother. Her best bud could be "Halling, son of Beatrice" or something.

Or that men say "Son of [Father]" and women say "Daughter of [Mother]" which is kind of what I assumed for no reason and based on nothing.

Oh yes the gun-toating combat engineer chick! OOOh yes. Who is she and will she make a reappearance?

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

That's Captain Alicia Vega. She's one of the military contingent, and is a combat soldier. She pops up as a member of a rather special AR team in "Whispers" later this season.

Well she can pump my tactical shotgun anytime.

AR team?

Can anyone find a youtube video of that awesome pullback from Rodney all the way to Michael's cruiser?

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

Sorry, AR = Atlantis Recon. This has yet to show up on the show (and probably never will) but the original writers bible for Atlantis said that the exploration teams deployed from the city would be called Atlantis Recon, and that Sheppard's team would eventually be designated AR-1.

Never happened, but damn it still sounds cool. [Razz]

It does, indeed. Come to think of it, did they ever designate Sheppard's team as...anything? I remember always simply hearing "Major Lorne's team" and "Colonel Sheppard's team," etc.

Posted by Mark Nguyen (Member # 469) on :

Nope, no designations whatsoever. My li'l circle of fans unofficially call Sergeant Bates' team AR-2, at least through the first season (as there seemed to be no other main teams, really). Lorne's team seems to be the only one we hear about regularly after that, though.

Finally saw the ep last night. One minor thing to add: Wasn't it absolutely convenient that the only people to survive the collapse of the building were major characters?

Posted by Daniel Butler (Member # 1689) on :

That irked me too, but I let it go because hey, TV does that.

Well, yeah. [Wink]
