With 480 minutes of extra features, there's no doubt that I will!

Good for you.
Amazon has The Phantom Menace for a 10/16/01 release date. They've no release dates for the other Star Wars films, so who knows?
Posted by Nimrod (Member # 205) on :
But there's no added scenes or bits? Like Kenobi's wet, dysfunctional sabre after clearing the droid ship? I'm not that interested in "Behind The Scenes" stuff, but bonus footage would be great...

Here's what Amazon lists as its, uh, feature compliment:
quote: Commentary by George Lucas, Rick McCallum, Ben Burtt, Rob Coleman, John Knoll, Dennis Muren and Scott Squires Exclusive Deleted Scenes Documentary features seven new sequences completed just for this DVD release All-new hour-long documentary film culled from over 600 hours of footage, "The Beginning," including an insiders look at Lucasfilm and ILM during the production Multi-angle storyboard to animatic to film segment featuring the Submarine and Podrace Lap 1 sequences Five Featurettes explore the storyline, design, costumes, visual effects and fight sequences Award-winning twelve-part web documentary series that chronicles the production "Duel of the Fates" music video featuring John Williams Never-before-seen Production Photo Gallery with special caption feature Theatrical posters and print campaign from around the world Theatrical teaser and launch trailers, and seven TV spots "Star Wars: Starfighter-The Making of a Game" featurette from LucasArts DVD-ROM weblink to exclusive Star Wars content Widescreen anamorphic format

In other words, lots of shit that doesn't really add to the movie itself.

Um...ok?

"Exclusive Deleted Scenes Documentary features seven new sequences completed just for this DVD release"
Did they insert the "deleted" scenes in the movie or did the idiots bundle them into a documentary that you must watch separately??? And wtf is a "sequence"?
Posted by Jeff Kardde (Member # 411) on :
I'm guessing (guessing) a "scene" ...
Posted by Nimrod (Member # 205) on :
Well then it's settled! Come to papa!
Posted by Bryan (Member # 632) on :
No, the deleted scenes haven't been added into the film.
They're avaliable on the side, most likely in a "deleted scenes" section, like on most DVDs.
The seven deleted scenes are:
1) Complete Podrace grid sequence 2) Extended Podrace second lap sequence 3) The waterfall sequence 4) The Air Taxi sequence 5) Dawn before the race 6) Anakin's scuffle with Greedo 7) Farewell to Jira (hopefully this includes the bit where Qui-Gon cuts down a Sith Probe before leaving the city)
I very much wanted to see the scene where Obi-Wan fries his saber and Qui-Gon lectures him about it, but alas...it appears that scene will not be included. Ah well.
The audio commentary should be interesting though! As will the multi-angle animatics/effects sequences.

The burning question is, of course, why release TPM and not the original Star Wars Trilogy? And why not Indy?!?!?!?!
Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :
Settle down, Mr. Beer. Don't blow your top and go away to a galaxy far, far away. Preferably that, actually. Indy, said the SW Insider, might be released next year. As for the original SW, it will have a lot more things, and might be released in the coming years. That is speculation, though.

Someone called me "Mr. Beer"
Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :
I've called you that before.

Forgive me for not noticing.

Actually the commertial goes into great detail about the deleted scenes. About 40 minutes in deleted scenes have not only been re-added, but those that were incomplete were re-filmed for dvd.

I most definantly will get the Episode I DVD, it's something for everyone to own in their collection. Why doesn't Lucas release the original trilogy on DVD? He probably will in a huge DVD pack, so he can earn more money. Like he does when he re-re-re-re-releases the classic trilogy on VHS. Remember he re-re-re-released (lol) the CT on VHS a couple months ago with a special Darth Vader Card and "Special look into Episode II"? *sigh*

quote:And while around 90% of the movie remains identical to the theatrical version, it appears that George can't leave the film alone. For the DVD release, he's added a full new Coruscant taxi transition sequence back into the film which is also included in the deleted scenes section. There are several other significant inclusions as well, including all new podracer introductions and a huge addition to lap two in the podrace. But don't worry, the podrace has never looked better.
quote:George Lucas recently expressed his desire to include only substantial cut scenes to the movie, each needing to be over a minute in length. Certain ones you might have enjoyed but have been passed over, like the lightsaber shorting out or Obi-Wan emerging from the swamps. Nevertheless, there are seven great scenes that made the final cut.
quote:All of the scenes are also included in the documentary, but you can also see them without watching the entire feature if desired
Which I assume means the movie.

How did you ever come to that conclusion? LOL.

quote:6) Anakin's scuffle with Greedo
Ah, I was wondering about this. I had read somewhere that this was actually a pivotal scene, which shows Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan that Anakin has some pent-up anger which is not a good sign for Jedi Knights-to-be. I think it would have worked; it would have been a subtle hint, but not over-the-top.
However, George decided to cut the only scene in the movie foreshadowing that Anakin really had some problems, and that he was not that cute, lovable, innocent little boy Lucas made him out to be.

I don't need a fight scene for me to know that the character has anger issues. I recognize myself when I was that age. Thankfully, I had a good parent who reached out to me at my most angriest moments.

Well, I got it on the first day, and I'll be the first to put in a review: The second disc is great, packed with documentaries, deleted scenes, and outtakes.
The actual movie was nice seeing again, with the commentary, and the sound on the movie is great. I noticed that the Episode 1 movie is actually a special edition--although it's not called that. George Lucas went back to the film and added some new scenes and new effects...take a look. He could re-release it right now and say it was the special edition!

Veers,
They mentioned above the re-added scenes
I bought the disc too. I didn't care a lot for the "technobabble" about the midichloreans, wish they'd cut that out. The movie's enjoyable, but I've had to go back to watch the original trilogy to get back into a 'Star Wars' flow ...
Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :
Oh. I guess I should've read the thread again after it hadn't been posted on in weeks.

I finally got the DVD, and in the words of Neo.."whoa"
Posted by G.K Nimrod (Member # 205) on :
So there additional scenes actually inserted IN the movie, instead of on disc 2? Otherwise I won't buy it, my widescreen VHS version is quite sufoskient.
Posted by TLE (Member # 280) on :
They have reinserted scenes on the movie on disc one as well as those and others not shown on disc two. I have only gotten to just before the Pod race in the movie so I can't say how much different it is except so far I haven't seen anything remarkably new.
