I think the title is rather unoriginal... what do you think?

What's next?

Indiana Jones & Adventures With The Whip?

Posted by Wes1701E (Member # 212) on :

LMAO... really though. I told most of my friends about it and they hate the title. I mean I really think they couldnt of picked a more crappy title (within reason, that is). It sounds like some shitty b-movie from the 60's.

Posted by MeGotBeer (Member # 411) on :

Then again, it's not like "A New Hope", "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" are particularly imaginative in and of themselves.

Sounds like the movies set during the clone wars. the title blows. it does sound like some crap B-movie. they probably have a movie called Attack of the Clones. who thought up that title? i wanna give him/her a smack upside the head.

Well, I suppose that clears that up. Lucas is mad, and must be stopped.

The following conversation transpired earlier today:

Burkebhamblin: Uh..."Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones"??? Um, ok, sure.
Shikishima: WHAT?!?
Burkebhamblin: That's the OFFICIAL title, per Starwars.com
Shikishima: How 1957 Roger Corman.
Burkebhamblin: Haha...no kidding
Shikishima: I see Lucas sitting there at a desk with books behind him a la Orson Welles of the narrator from "Rocky Horror" in B&W as a theremin plays over him while he arches his eyebrows hypnotically...
Burkebhamblin: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Shikishima: "The tale I am about to tell you is not for the light of heart to hear or skilled of acting to perform....."
Burkebhamblin: Oh man...my gut hurts
Shikishima: Oh, wait! He'd have to be overdubbed by Rob Paulsen, too...the guy who does the voice for The Brain & who did Orson Welles & Kirk Douglas on "The Critic"...
Burkebhamblin: Hahahaha...dammit
Shikishima: As a young Anakin is dressed like Wally Beaver, with Amidala as his poodle-skirt girlfriend...
Shikishima: And Obi-wan as the professor with tweed sportcoat with leather elbow patches, beard, & a pipe.
Shikishima: And perhaps a monocle.

It's not like Star Trek: the Motion Picture, The Search for Spock, and the Voyage Home were creative titles, either.
The SW Insider gives a lot of info, and from the looks of it, the movie will be better than TPM. Jar Jar will have a different (hopefully smaller) role, says Steven J. Sansweet.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Uh huh. Will this be before or after Lucas' mothership, carefully concealed behind the comet Hale-Bopp, comes to aid in our ascension to the Level Beyond Human?

He MUST be from another planet to put some shmuck title like ATTACK OF THE CLONES on a star wars movie. What was he smokin?

Posted by MeGotBeer (Member # 411) on :

As much as I hate the title ...

He did create Star Wars. So he's from whatever planet allows a person to create both Star Wars and Indiana Jones (and Howard the Duck...)

Good God. What next? Star Wars Episode III: Anakin Falls Into a Pit of Lava?

Posted by Aban Rune (Member # 226) on :

Add "Killer" to that and it would be perfect. Star Wars: Episode 2-Attack of the Killer Clones.

See, the problem isn't that it's not terribly creative. The other titles are fairly straightforward too. The problem is that it doesn't sound like any of the other titles. All the other titles at least had a level of seriousness to them. This one sound like pure camp. And it's supposed to be more serious than the first one.

Me no like. To me it sounds like one of those things where everyone in the office disagrees, but the boss has made up his mind so that's the way it's going to be. My office is like that

Howard the Duck...Willow...If only he had agreed not to do those films, his career would be straight and clean (except for Jar Jar).
Who lives in Marin County (or just California) that can sneak into Skywalker Ranch and talk some sense into the man?

I like your new "old English" name.

Well, at least better than "The Shadow."

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

No doubt, though, Lucas has troops guarding the ranch, motion detectors, and a helicopter... It would be hard to sneak in without getting shot... Or, at least, detected and forced to watch the "Willow" DVD.

Posted by Vogon Poet (Member # 393) on :

You could hit a couple of guards on the head and steal their uniforms. . .

Posted by MeGotBeer (Member # 411) on :

Or, you could smuggle yourself in on an 18-wheeler conveniently named the "Millennium Falcon."

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

Or fire a rocket into a ventilation shaft! The ranch goes boom!

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

Hey now, I actually liked Willow.

"Attack of the Clones" doesn't really bug as much as some of the other subtitles that were possibly considered:

Posted by Aethelwer (Member # 36) on :

"The Shadow" was a B5 reference, from when we still had "The Vorlon" and "The First One."

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

"the title blows. it does sound like some crap B-movie."

"It sounds like some shitty b-movie from the 60's."

And what do you think the influence of Star Wars is? 2001: A Space Oddessey, or the old Buck Rogers and Flash Gorden serials?

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I was going to give kudos to Shik. Despite the fact that he obviously posted that message just to convince us that his friend finds him funny, the fact that he knows who played The Brain automatically makes him at least semi-cool.

Or at least he would be, if Rob Paulsen hadn't been the one who played Pinky. Maurice LaMarche played the Brain, Orson Welles on The Critic, Kif in Futurama, and Dick McMan, Ratman, Simion, Washington, and Additional Voices on Dexter's Lab.

But let's return to "Lucus sux! He ignroes continuity and will have phaserz and tranportes". Or something.

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

Lucas is cool. He had just watched Howard the Duck the night before, got drunk at a party with Rick McCallum, and ended up sleeping in his TV Control Room watching satellite pics of Bill Gate's mansion.
Ok, ok, so he probably didn't. But I can't see why Rick McCallum, John Williams, or any other people there approved of the title. I wonder what they thought when he said, "how about 'Attack of the Clones?'" Probably got some stares.

Posted by USS Vanguard (Member # 130) on :

Now, "Send in the Clones" would have been much more appropriate.

Posted by Siegfried (Member # 29) on :

quote:

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't John Williams the film's music composer and orchestrator? As such, I highly doubt that he would have any say in the film's subtitle. Unless, of course, there is another "John Williams" out there. :: cue X-Files music ::

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

Does anyone really believe there's any quality control left in the Lucas compound? Nobody seemed to be around when the script notes consisted of "Add more 'yippees' to the script and make the Chinese accents more outrageous."

Anyway, let's compare the subtitles.

Star Wars: A New Hope. Well, no one calls it that. Apparently that title wasn't even there on the original credits. So, Star Wars. It's ok. Not exactly awe inspiring. It's an icon now, of course.

The Empire Strikes Back. Notice there wasn't any of this "Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" nonsense. So, which empire? Oh, yeah, THE Empire. Ok. What are they doing? Striking back? Makes sense, considering the first movie.

Return of the Jedi. Or was it The Return of the Jedi? Anyway, so the Jedi are returning. Well, sort of. Luke is, anyway, and he's almost a Jedi. Return of the Guy Who May Become A Jedi By The End Of The Film is a bit too wordy. Note that there were Ewoks in this film.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Hmm. Ok. So, a menace is out there. It's all phantomy and hidden and stuff. It's Palpatine. This sounded kind of silly at first, but I think it works, in the end.

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Ok, so there are some clones. They attack! Oh no! Which clones? I don't know. Just, you know, all of them. The problem isn't just its campiness. It's the totally random nature of the title. The first sequels had some connection to the film in their title. Phantom Menace didn't, really, but was kind of ok because no one was quite sure what the film would be about anyway.

There was a film released in the 70's called Parts: The Clonus Horror. It was about clones too. It had a better title.

Come see the Star Wars double feature! With 'Attack of the Clones' in 3-D! Wow!

And as far as Lucas inventing Star Wars, I recall reading that he got the idea from an old Japanese anime. So really it would of been more like, "Hmm... y'know I could make a movie off this." I wish I knew the title of the anime though.

What is the guy thinking!?! This has to be some kind of joke. It couldn't get any worse. Unless the clones being referred to are an army of Jar Jar Binks clones: "Yousa peeple gonna die!!" (shudder)

I don't think he'd be saying on the official site that the title was going to be "Attack of the Clones" if he was trying to use the title as decoy. Unless he's going to do the thing in reverse.

What's the betting that by the time the film comes out, human cloning has become so controversial that they change it. . .

I kinda doubt that. For one, he was fairly obviously trying to do an updated version of the old 50s pulp sci-fi serials. Second, the plot of "The Star Wars", as originally written, bears almost no connection to the film that aired.

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

Um, in response to a post on Page 2, I said John Williams because he was the only other one I could think of. So, what about Doug Chiang, or Ewasn McGregor, or Hayden Christensen? Of course, they've already been filmed, so they couldn't object...
And I just thought of the possibly, also (that other people have stated), that this title is a working title, and not the actual film title. The movie comes out on May 22, 2002. The trailer won't be showed until December. Is it me, or was the title released a bit too early?

From the IMDB Poll (note: results may change!):

George Lucas has said he named Star Wars: Episode II the Attack of the Clones in an attempt to recapture some of the fun and adventure of the halcyon days of moviemaking. After this whacky choice, what do you think was most likely his second runner-up?

Bride of Jar-Jar (32.6%)
Anakin Skywalker: Boy Jedi (20.1%)
Obi-Wan and Anakin Meet the Wolfman (13.9%)
The Road to Coruscant (12.7%)
The Rebel Gang in "Clone-in' Around" (12.5%)
Other (6.8%)
The Big Cantina Broadcast of 2002 (1.4%)

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

Kudos to that 1.4% for getting in a Transformers reference. It's stuff like that that give me the will to carry on.

For some reason, I doubt a lot of critics are going to say it's a stupid title. Instead from what I could tell, they'll try to make slight hints at that without actually saying it's dumb.

For example most statements come out as "Well George Lucas is such a visionary! Who else would think to use a b-movie title for a movie like Star Wars! He's a genius! Lucas pays homage to 1950's movie titles!"

[ August 13, 2001: Message edited by: Hobbes ]

Posted by MeGotBeer (Member # 411) on :

Look, Lucas' best movie successes have been geared for "b" movies ...

Star Wars ... Indiana Jones ...

I mean, "The Temple of Doom" is kind of "B"-ish too.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

This is true. Those titles have had similar connotations. But seriously, "Attack of the Clones"? Wouldn't "The Clone Wars" or some-such be a little more palatable? I really don't think I can take this movie seriously with a name like that.

The thing about Indiana Jones is that you're not exactly supposed to take it seriously. It sort of like a comic book adventure. MAny have said this to be true of Star Wars also, and in the beginning it was true, but now George has turned it into this big, epic story which just doesn't fit with the title.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 138) on :

I agree. I recall hearing that Star Wars was originally suppose to be a satire on sci-fi movies. When it gained popularity though, suddenly it became this huge epic story.

Posted by Wes1701E (Member # 212) on :

This is the way I see it.

A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
The Return of the Jedi

The Temple of Doom
The Lost Ark
The Last Crusade

all boring titles alone, but give them 20-30 years of being huge sucesses and great movies to back those titles up, and they sound normal...

Posted by Stingray (Member # 621) on :

Temple of Doom sucked.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

There's a few large differences, which I thought I had already pointed out, but perhaps the heat is causing me to hallucinate. Anyway, a friend of mine mentioned the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" title too, and despite the fact that it is dreadfully dull and parses oddly, it is not a cliche.

Posted by The Mighty Monkey of Mim (Member # 646) on :

Temple of Doom was cool! How can you say it sucked? Even though it was the least serious of the three, I liked the more humorous tone. It was my favorite of the series.

A little off topic, does anyone know why Lucas/Speilberg made ToD a prequel to RotLA?

Even more off topic, I wish they'd rename RotLA "INDIANA JONES and the Raiders of the Lost Ark." It's so much more fitting with the others, but it'll probably never happen.

Okay, I'm just rambling on now. I think I'll get some friggin' sleep.

I was actually thinking, "Star Wars: The Clone Warriors" myself.

Of course, even before that, I was thinking "Star Wars: Birth of the Empire," but who knew if the Empire would actually form in Episode II?

I think Lucas needs to start listening to his fans more than trying to make his own decisions, or more realistically, having the Marketing Department making his decisions for him.

i just started re-reading some of the star wars novels out there, (for about the 6th time each) and i just realized that nearly all of them have really good titles. maybe if lucas asked some novelists or the general public to think up some titles, maybe with a prize for the best one.

i wouldn't. If it came from CNN. then it must be the real thing. cause CNN is omniscient. I wonder if there will be any mention of the Camaas Massacre. like in Spectre of the Past. and Vision of the Future. but probably not. It happened while Palpatine was still a senator. and i though the Wookies were discovered by the Empire. not the old republic, like in EP1.

Posted by Veers (Member # 661) on :

I think Palpatine will die in one of the next films, then be brought back through cloning (Line from Dark Empire, about RotJ: "It wasn't the first time I died, nor will it be the last...")
Of course, then Bush will come in and stop him.

Despite the title, you all will go see it. I haven't seen anyone here mention they're boycotting the film. You all act as if Lucas owes you something.

It is his film.
It is his idea.
He calls the shots.
He gets to choose the title.
Deal with it.

On a totally unrelated note, look at the pic of Obi-Wan holding his sabre on that site. It's not the one he uses in the later films. So either he looses ANOTHER sabre some time in the next two movies, or Lucas totally ignored that aspect of continuity. Maybe he'll digitally re-re-do the later films and overdraw all the sabres?
