In ANH, Obi-Wan tells Luke that the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and order for a thousand generations in the Old Republic.
In AoTC, Palpatine says that the Republic has stood for a thousand years.
So, who is right? I'd rather it be Obi-Wan. I like the idea of a REALLY old society.

The Jedi could have been around longer than the Republic. They may have been keeping peace and order before the Republic was formed. Now that the Republic is the recognized center of power, they serve the Republic at their discretion.

I'd say that the Old Republic is ancient, given what we know of the SW universe. An age of "a thousand generations" -- approximately thirty millenia -- does seem more likely.

Abane, but Obi-Wan says that they were keepers of the peace in the Old Republic for a thousand generations ... not that they existed for a thousand generations.

Hmmm....Yah...that sounds right. It's been a while since I've seen it. And I didn't really catch Palpatine's line in AotC.
I guess we could argue that Palp meant the Republic, as it exists now. Presumably, most of the Star Wars galaxy has been explored and they have as many sytems as they expect to get. Maybe he meant, the "Full" Republic has existed for 1000 years.
I'm reaching...and I'm proud of it.

Or maybe there was an Old Republic which somehow fell, and the current one is the New Republic...

Perhaps there was a period of instability or other major changes that ended 1000 years before Palpatine's statement.

Or perhaps the Chancellor actually had a proper seat for the first 29,000 years, and has been forced to stand for the last thousand years only?

Or maybe he was wrong? Myabe he meant a thousand genrations as well??
In the books, state that the Old Republic is about 25,000+ years old give or taken a century or two. The Jedi Council was formed around the same time as well.
And no, the Star Wars galaxy was not fully explored yet.

Maybe the Jedi just die young and breed quickly.

All but the main characters, apparently.
You realize that all of those Youngling Jedi that Yoda was training in AOTC are going to get killed in the next movie...
James Dean had nothing on that.

Yeah, but they ought to be in their late teens by then...
