Ok this is going to sound like a stupid question, but after the first Death Star is destroyed the Falcon, Luke, Wedge and a Y-wing are seen leaving. Where did that extra Y-wing come from, didnt we see the annhilation of all Gold Squadron?

Didn't an X-Wing and a Y-Wing a different points have to turn back, from damage??

I don't know about the Y-wing directly in the movie, but from the novelization of "Star Wars," there were supposed to be a lot more fighters that were in a diversionary battle.
Remember Vader on the Death Star? "Several fighters have broken off from the main group. Come with me." (Or was that "Cover me"?)
Of course, it's dramatically more tragic to note that only three pilots survived out of the original two dozen or so...

The extra fighter is piloted, of course, by YOU! You being the hero of X-Wing, that is.

I am honoured.....

Well the several fighters that Vader was talking about were the Y-wings sent in to make the trench run. They broke off from the X-wings

But the hero of X-Wing flew... an X-Wing.

You'd have to read the official strategy guide.
And you flew lots of ships. Well, three, not counting the B-Wing expansion.

Well, yes, but not in the final Trench Run mission.

Right, I know that. What I was trying to say was that the main battle between Rebel and Imperial fighters was still going on while a few of them made the trench run.
Otherwise, there would be several squadrons of TIE fighters all strafing that particular trench in order to wipe out those three puny fighters all at once.

You could do it in a B-Wing in the expansion.
And you can do it in a Y-Wing in Rogue Leader. Problem solved.
Anyway, the ship flyby during the SE of Star Wars has 30 rebel ships. Because someone at ILM said "We put 30 ships there. Because an imperial officer says 'we count 30 rebel ships Lord Vadar'. So we put 30 ships there. So it matches".
Howsabout someone less sexy than me checking their video and seeing if there are more than 3 Y-Wings visible in that shot? I'm pretty sure we see a few in the hanger, and taking off.
