My archival drive ate itself Monday afternoon. well, I helped a bit by banging on it. It's a long story.

Suffice it to say that I only managed to pull about 58% of the data before the drive started ticking. That's right, ticking. Most of my webstuff is fine, but I lost the images, archived old pages, and sounds. That's OK, though, because I can pull it from my server.

I lost all my porn. Not so bad, except for some images I really liked, like an old ex-girlfriend.

I lost my arcade games, but someone else has them that I can steal from.

I lost the "saved EXE" files like the giant 22 MB PSP6 DL I had. That pisses me off. I lost all my model shots, but I can grab them from my server as well. I lost my sim info, but most of the documents can be transcribed. Well, 3 of them can.

I saved almost all my MP3s, almost all my ship reference pix, almost all my important archived IMs. Almost.

The annoyance: I had to pull all of this stuff through DOS, so all the filenames are now truncated, thus being completely useless to me. Now I have to buy a new drive for $120 (as well as a new CD-ROM for $50)& rebuild.

I still have to pack. I have to work from 6 to....whenever tomorrow.

This sucks.

Anyone into data recovery techniques?

Or send your drive to a specialised data recovery firm, it might be possible to rescue a bit more of the information.

My computer packed in last week. I have no idea what caused it, but it just went crazy whilst I was working, the cursor developed a mind of its own and started moving around of its own free will, then the computer just turned itself off. When I tried to log back on, it wouldn't work. It won't let me go into Windows and is just stuck at Dos Prompt. I suppose I was lucky this all happened after I'd completed the big assignments and handed them in. The one that I had been working on was just 800 words, which I lost and couldn't retrieve, but it wasn't much to do that one again.

I've had the computer for years now anyway, so it was probably Bill Gates' pre-programmed way of telling me to buy another PC.

Data recovery places want things like....money. I need that money. Something about having furniture & all that.

But...I know a guy who knows a guy ad infinitum who might be able to pull for me. I dunno. Gotta talk to him today.

This could just be over here, but don't data recovery places tend to get a bit funny about recovering a hard drive filled with porn?

It was by no means "filled." And the porn isn't what I want recovered.

I can see that now...

Shik: Yes I lost my harddrive's contents and would like to get it back if that's at all possible.
Recovery Guy: What did you lose?
Shik: Some programs, music, movies and a lot of porn. A lot. I would be real appreciative if you can get as much possible back for me.
Recovery Guy: Uh, okay. We'll, ahem see what we can do for you.
as he turns around shaking his head in disbelief to tell the people in the back of the store.

Actually, her name's Vanessa Catuzzi...but yeah, basically.

What I'd really like is the games & sim stuff I lost as well as the archived programs. Of course, if they could get the rest of it with the long filenames intact, that would be great, too.

I just kinda picked a name at random. I suspect you'd have been quite freaked out if I'd come straight out and said Vanessa Catuzzi. . .

So, what's she doing in these photos? 8)

Just posing.."playing"...the usual. Wouldn't be surprised if there were a few "girlie movies" available as well.
