So, on Wednesday, I needed to take a trip back to State College to pick up some stuff I forgot when I moved. Now it's only 350 miles, but it was a fun begining to an soon-to-be-exciting day.
Let me explain by going back a couple of weeks. When I moved, the girls who were taking over my half of the appartment asked me to switch the phone line over to their name, "Ok, sure". I called Verizon to make the change, they told me to have the other person call. The info was relayed, and I moved out.
Now flash forward a week, I call verizon to make sure the line was switch over, they tell me that it wasn't and that line has been in almost constant use. Arrrgggghhhh... I understood in an instant what was going on, I smiled, then cancelled My phone services. I wasn't going to let them rack up charges on my line. Screw that!
So, back to my day trip. Which I made in under 4 hours. I'm greeted at the door by one of the girls who nicly askes me if I had a good trip and would I be interested in coming back here on a different day. My reply "Yes and no, why?" She told me too bad, because I'm taking you to a small claimes court. I couldn't believe what I just heard, so I gave her a dumb look and asked why. For cutting off the phone line, and we can't afford to get it turned back on, and I feel that we can win so that's what were doing.
I was trying real hard not to laugh in her face. Hey, if they want to try to take me to court over this, then by all means they can try. What the hell do they think will happen, I'm getting sued, because I cancelled My phone line, before they can rack up a large bill. There is no case here....
To make a long story short, I got my stuff, told her to give it her best shot, then left.
I was giggling about it for almost the entire ride home, even now, get a small chuckle out of it. Everybody I tell this to, thinks this is some kind of a joke. So I knew I had to post this here.....

350 miles? What is that ... 6 hour drive (assuming an average speed of 60mph)? Always fun. I guess the girls might have a case if the fault was with Verizon -- i.e., they called and Verizon fucked up switching over some how. Anyways, enjoy.

Oh, where were you driving to State College from?

Well, if it is a Vorizon screw up, then they have no case against you, just Vorizon, so I really don't see any way for you to lose. Unless they hire Johnny Cochrane...

EDIT: Of course, now that I think about it, if they don't have enough money to reactivate the phone...how the hell are they going to afford a lawyer?

yeah, it would normally take 6 hours, but I feel that the posted speed limit is nothing more than a .... suggestion.
I moved back to a Northwest corner town called New Preston, in Connecticut. yay for me...

And after 3 weeks of searching for a job, I landed myself the position of QC manager, at a local industry. yipee for me.

Manji, my friend...

First of all, did you really expect me not to read this post? Shik throws the URL of this board at everyone he knows, of COURSE I come here.

Second, I think I'll just put forth a few pieces of information that others reading this might want to know, and that you may even not have known:

That "near-constant use" was LOCAL INTERNET DIALUP, which cost you nothing. A quick email to Shik or myself would have found this out, but did you bother? No.

It may in fact have been a Verizon screwup, or it may have been that you never bothered to REMEMBER MY NAME when you called them, so how on earth could they have known who you wanted to switch it to? I called them, Shik called them, but since you hadn't bothered to leave your SSN with Shik, we could not authorize the switch ourselves.

You seemed willing enough to go to Verizon and ask them to clear it up when my girlfriend was flirting with you all innocent-like.

And for someone who left the electric bill unpaid for the last two months, you're doing an awful lot of worrying about bills not getting paid...

(BTW, 359, you don't need a lawyer for small-claims. It's like going on Judge Judy or something.)

Tesla: Erm... If you needed his SN to make the change, shouldn't you have contacted him to get it? If you knew you were using a phone line under someone else's name w/o their knowledge, you shouldn't have been at all surprised when that person shut it off.

Man, I bet none of you live in a city with worse weather the mine, I live in Calgary by the way.

Just last week, we get +35 degree C, and the winter of 99, the coldest temperature was -32 degree C, and that's WITHOUT windchill, with windchill it's like -40 or 50 or something.

I acutually got 2 days off school ever since I've been here at Calgary due to the excessive amount of snow fall.

Now, you guys try to beat that!

People take other people to court for the stupidest things. it's amusing hearing the excuses some people make up. i'm no expert on law, but couldn't you sue them for racking up your phone bill?

Couple winters ago, the temperature dropped to -43 degrees Celsius. with the windchill it was -50, also during the summer, that same year, we got a massive storm, and it knocked down a tree oustide our cabin. it was a very tall tree, at least 70 years old. it was a meter from our cabin and it streched all the way across the street into our neighbors front porch. took out power too.

I'd like to point out, Tesla, that local internet dialup does indeed run an expense. That expense comes in the form of the monthly local telephone bill. The point of the matter is that you were using the phone line to make the connection and the bill was going to wind up being sent to Manji.

Now then, Manji, you should have called Tesla when you found out that the phone line had not been switched to their billing information. It would have been the polite thing to do to see what the problem was. If it was a hassle with Verizon (like Tesla says), then you could have quickly straightened things out. Point is, you really should have called Tesla.

However, I'm not saying this is simply your fault. It isn't. Tesla, you should have made the effort to call Manji when Verizon demanded his social security number instead of essentially saying "screw it" and using the phone line while it was still being billed to Manji.

What we have here is a failure to communicate. My advice is that, Tesla and Manji, y'all talk this out and figure out something to do besides going to small claims court. With the present information available, the case would either be thrown out by the judge or decided in favor of the defendent. So email each other, call each other, meet somewhere, do whatever it takes and save yourselves the hassle of appearing in court to have a judge decide. Talking this out and settling it yourselves would be much less expensive. In Harris County, it costs approximately $300 to bring a case before a small claims judge. That's more than enough to have Verizon reconnect and reinstall a phone line. Add to that at least a day's worth of wages lost because y'all have to appear in the court. In short, it's not worth it to take this to court over something so small and so easily settled on your own.

Best of luck to y'all.

Unless of course she takes him to Small-Claims court regarding the alleged un-paid electric bill. But, still, you don't think the gains would equal the money they'd have to pay out ...
