Siegfried: (9:37 PM) We have the Nimitz on the West Coast, the Washington and Kennedy on the East Coast, and the Enterprise in the Persian Gulf. Where are the Truman, Ranger, and other carrier groups?

Well, we're just trying to figure out what battle groups are where. Any rumors/info ...

Well, the Kitty Hawk is apparently stationed in the Pacific as well. Right now, she's at Yokosura, Japan. The US Navy also seems to have part of the 6th Fleet stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, but that was likely before the attacks.

Here is the under way list from Navy.mil

Aircraft carriers underway:

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) — Indian Ocean
USS Constellation (CV 64) — Pacific Ocean
USS Enterprise (CVN 65) — Arabian Gulf
USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) — Pacific Ocean

Submarines underway (away from homeport): 24 submarines (41% of submarine force)
On deployment: 15 submarines (25% of submarine force)

I believe the 7th Fleet is the closest to Afghanistan and it appears to be the largest fleet , has 2 carriers and a good chunk of the fleet is made up of Guided Missle Cruisers and Attack Subs that carry Tomahawk Missles like the ones used on the 98 retal strikes.

1. Kitty Hawk
2. Constellation
3. Enterprise
4. John F. Kennedy
5. Nimitz
6. Dwight D. Eisenhower
7. Carl Vinson
8. Theodore Roosevelt
9. Abraham Lincoln
10. George Washington
11. John C. Stennis
12. Harry S. Truman

These are the Active Carriers in the Navy List

1. Ranger
2. America
3. Independance

These are inactive and in moth balls.

As for the Army , the 82nd Airborne's Website has a sign posted on it showing "THREATCON DELTA" meaning a Terrorist Attack has occured and all military installations are on lockdown.

What about the Reagan? Didn't they commission her a while back?

USS George Washington is currently in New York Harbor, with the ships of her fleet blocking off the harbor to all unauthorized boats.

USS John F. Kennedy is off the coast of Washington D.C. and is prepared to aid in anyway needed.

USS John C. Stennis is off the west coast on it's way back from Japan. USS Kitty Hawk is also in the area.

USS Enterprise was returning from the Persian Gulf after being replaced by another carrier, but was ordered to halt dead in the ocean, turn back around, and head to the Persian Gulf again.

USS Ronald Reagen is most likely undergoing sea-trials and is not assigned to a battle fleet at the moment.

No clue about the other carriers though. I would think at least one or maybe two are in refit or refueling.

Considering the comissioning date of the Ronald Reagan, she won't be in active duty for a good bit of time. According to CARRIER - A Guided Tour of an Aircraft Carrier by Tom Clancy it takes 6 to 8 months for a carrier to complete seatrials, and Reagan was commissioned early March ... so, she should be up and running in November or December at the earliest.
