Well... not quite. I'd guess that whatever they're doing isn't holograms as we consider them in the real world -- or even in the Trek world. But the effect is basically the same.

A two- or three-dimensional, interactive computer display environment that can react to the movements of your hands -- even pointing it through the display to manipulate data (basically replacing the mouse).

Pretty darn cool! Gonna cost an arm and a leg if you want to get it some time before the next decade or two, but the very concept -- and the fact that it's being made practical -- is very exciting!

Huh. we'll FINALLY get interactive monitors?

I sure hope so: the digital presses (by Xerox) I've used for years have full color interactive touchscreen controls.
A small grid of infra red sensors at the screen's border tracks your hand's movements and you only touch the screen lightly.

Imagine how cool those Trek websites with a LCARS interface will be. [Big Grin]

There's a very good reason why most people don't have interactive monitors. For any real length of time, they are highly impractical to use.

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

Well...mabye if you need moth hands and you surf the porn sites.... [Wink]

You'd still use the mouse in conjunction with the touchscreen (for cursor placement in text as one example).

The touchscreen would be ideal for sites with many menus and images.

No mouse, you just point, move, and gesture, perhaps in a similar, but far less calisthenic, way as Tom Cruise did in Minority Report
Although most other people won't have to stand on a box.

No. You would end up in extreme pain. And Tom Cruise should have been suffering from the worst case of RSI ever. Or at least very, very sore muscles.

From what I have seen I am truly amazed.

Anyone think that the picture with the planet looked as though it came out of some first season TNG episode??? [Smile]

Yes. If you could virtually bitch-slap your ships for wandering into a minefield or breaking formation and being picked off one by one or moving to tactically unsound positions without authorization or ramming enemy carriers/destroyers when you really didn't press K then maybe you wouldn't be so inclined to smash your Monitor out of untamed frustration and everything would be cozy and happy and enjoyable again.
