I will be switching ISPs in the foreseeable future, and as a rather unwelcome side-effect, will lose my current e-mail address.

I don't want that to happen again, and am thinking of getting a ISP-independent address. I have a bunch of those related to my university, but those will eventually become unusable too.

I could of course go for Hotmail, Fastermail or whatever free webmail-based account, but I'd like to have POP3 as well. And besides, "@hotmail.com" doesn't look very professional.

Of course, in an ideal world, I'd want a free POP3 account with workable features (free redirect, adequate size-limits), but that seems to be out of the question.

As I see it, there are 2 options:
1) Forget about it, and either use your next ISP's address or your Uni's address.
2) Get a paid email address.

There's perhaps another option, and that's a domain-name with e-mail. I have zero experience with the whole domain-name business, so perhaps someone could clear this up for me? I think this option might be the best...

There's also a service out there where you get given an email address that is merely a front for whatever email address you are currently using. It's not a POP3 account with free redirect. Rather, it's just a single address that is redicected to wherever you want. That way you can change ISPs as many times as you want, and your email address will appear to remain the same to everyone else.

I have no idea who offers this service though. And I could have imagined the whole thing.

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

What Liam describes is how my university is handling email accounts now. Every student gets an email account (that will likely expire a few months past graduation) and an alias that redirects email to whatever account use have specified.

That's exactly how my university handles email accounts. I wouldn't be surprised if that's how most universities handle email accounts...

Nope. We just get an email account. Or in my case, two, because I am special and doing something with computers.

Does the alias expire after graduation? Because if so, it's not overly useful, is it?

An alias that stays valid for three to five years until you graduate isn't overly useful?

Cartman: No, it's not, because you if it's just valid until you graduate, you might as well use your normal university account.
